Post subject:  alternative to points

Evening,

Is there an aftermarket kit to convert away from points on the /6? Additionally, does anyone make an aftermarket distributor if points conversion kits aren't available?

Many people here have used the pertronix brand ignitor products. I believe mallory also makes one for a /6 distributor. You can always convert to a mopar electronic ignition but that would require a different ballast resistor, mopar magnetic pickup distributor, and an aditional control box. You can use an msd 6a box with a stock points distributor as well.

The quickest and easiest way to get rid of points with no other associated parts required would be a pertronix or mallory unit. My local monument auto parts sells pertronix and keeps them in stock, so you may want to hunt around. Otherwise I'm pretty sure I saw them in the summitracing catalog before.

Post subject:  Mopar EI

All the parts for the mopar EI conversion are easily available from your local parts store (about $100 for a distributor and control unit), except a piece from the wiring harness, which your dodge dealer can order ($20-$30 i've heard) The harness is the same piece for converting a v-8 to electronic (but don't buy a whole kit, because the v-8 distributor is different)

If you have junk yards with 1975-1980 slanted cars nearby, they should almost all have the required parts, but don't go without doing some homework and expect to get everything the first trip. Pre-77 Chrylser v-8 cars and trucks used mostly the same EI wiring as slants, so if you have a good EI distributor you can get the rest from one of those as well. Don't get anyting from a car with 'Lean Burn', the ignition is completely different.

An hour with a wiring diagram and some fancy splicing should have you ready to start readjusting everything else to work with your hotter spark.

That's not to say that an MSD wouldn't be a better upgrade, but the Mopar standard EI stuff is cheaper, available, and can still be a good improvement over points, depending on your needs.

Be ready to do several hours of timing and carb adjustments to really make either upgrade shine.

Post subject:  P/n?

All of this information is extremely useful. I have a 6A MSD box from another project, so that's no problem. I like the idea of using the mopar EI components (for the distributor anyway), but what P/N should I reference.. The local MOPAR dealers are tight lipped and routinely laugh at us old MOPAR lovers. The figure if it's not a viper then they don't owe us a thing *Sigh*. Additionally, do I need an entirely new Distributor, or can i install a point conversion in my current / housing. If I have to get a new one I might just shell out for an aftermarket unit like Pierre suggested.

Any further information is welcome.

The MSD-6A box can work with points easily enough. When you install one in this manner, the points don't carry nearly as much current as they do when triggering the ignition directly and do not wear out as fast. They still do have some wear issues though.

I did my electronic conversion a little differently.
I went to the yard and got an electronic distributer and GM HEI module for $10. then went to the auto parts store and got an internal resistor coil for $23 and some wire and connectors. made up 5 wires with the corisponding connectors and have been running great for over a year now.

does the HEI fit the stock position? I thought that they had a completely different setup. That sounds really neat.

I have since this picture moved the coil to the inner fender next to the HEI module

Post subject:  trick setup

Sounds like several people have really cool ignitions! I'm really glad I asked, because now I have some choices. I am going to incorporate my 6A into the mix, and probably get a petronix (Kaynt psell) setup. The Homebuilt FI and Ford Thing sounds cool, as does the custom HEI. I don't see a reason to waste a perfectly good MSD when it's got no other home.

:)
