Post subject:  MP electronic igntion, or stock?

When I bought my '64 Valiant a couple of years ago, I ordered a Mopar Performance ignition system to be installed when I re-built the engine. To my surprise, the engine burns no oil and has good oil pressure, so it looks like a re-build is quite a ways down the road. However, the distrubutor is now due for a tuneup, so I'm taking the opportunity to go the electronic ignition route.

This engine will eventually get nothing more than a Super Six setup and improved exhaust, so I'm thinking the MP electronics might be overkill and could actually hurt fuel mileage and driveability without improving performance.

Perhaps I would be better off to install a new or remanufactured stock electronic distributor along with the orange box....opinions? If I go with the stock distributor, which year makes the most sense?

My opinion: Even if the factory electronic ignition dosn't improve performance or add horse power, the fact that you don't have to change points anymore is a huge plus. The system is much more reliable, and easy to do the swap. Points start wearing as soon as you start the engine; electronic holds its dwell and timing, which dosn't change. Points, as they wear, changes dwell, and as a result the timing changes meaning everytime you change points, you have to make sure the dwell is set and the timing is reset. If you don't want to use the factory electronic set up, Pertronix is another very good option, and many here have had good luck with it. This allows you to keep your points distributer without having to install any extra wiring (well, maybe one extra).

Another opinion; the MP setup isn't doing you any good in the box.
Go ahead and use it - it should improve performance and probably mpg over the weak point setup.
The MP distributor will hopefully be better than the garbage they're putting in the parts stores.
The kit comes with an orange box, which is better than factory/reman.
It does have a quicker advance curve in the distributor, and you may need to fiddle with it a bit to sweeten it, but once it's dialed, I think you'll be happy.
