hi, my lights pulse some when idleing,is there a way to fix this or is it just a consequence of having an old car?car in question is a 67 dart gt, i have a cd player/small(50w) amp, the light on the cd player doesnt pulse(it did when it was in my 93 plymouth laser) but the headlights and radio and gauges do, thanks for any input... |

At low engine speed, that is pretty much normal, especially with the old mechanical voltage regulators. |

J.C.Whitney sells electronic voltage regulators that look like the old mechanical ones and fit the same just fine - I used one in the Tidewater Mopar Club (TMC)'s '65 Barracuda and it worked well and cost around $10. A bad alternator with a bad diode or stator can also make the lights pulse. |

where would the voltage regulator be? is it mounted on the fender or built into the alt. or what? thanks |

On my mom's 68 Valiant, it was on the driver's side of the firewall in the engine compartment... You couldn't miss the thing, black box that was stamped Volt. Reg., when you have the car in park and idling with the headlights on it should have a faint 'buzz' to it like someone trapped some bees in the box...if it's in good condition, you'll have to be pretty close to hear it. Most 'chain stores' now carry the electronic version of that box as a replacement. If you find it and that's not the culprit, I'd definately be voting for the alternator next. -D.Idiot |
