Post subject:  Super Six + Bigger Exhaust = WOOOOWWWW!!

Finished the Super Six install last night, and took it for a spin. Could definately feel a difference in throttle response and power, even with the tiny 1 1/2" exhaust.

Well, today I took it down to the muffler shop and had 2 1/4" pipe run out to the bumper from the stock manifold, with a Borla turbo muffler. It sounds awesome, almost like an old 6 cylinder Jag, or maybe a BMW 2002. 8)

All I can say is that it is now a lot quicker than stock, everywhere in the powerband. I can get up to traffic-speed in a hurry, even with just 170 cubes. :D

The only annoyance is that it kind of loads up when you shut it off, so you have to play with the throttle to get it to hot-start quickly.

Overall, every slant six needs this modification.

Nick,
"This is quick for a slant six!"

Cool!!!!!Moosman,
What kind of car is this on???I just bought my wife a 63 Dodge Dart 170 and drove it a 125 miles home and it really suprised me(all stock 170 with 3 on the tree and 3.55 gears)its quite spunky and kept up with traffic in fine manner, but like every other hot rodder ,I would like to boost the performance some. What carb are you using and do you have anyother mods(cam, headwork etc.)I like the 170 because it revs quicker and is more fun in my opinion.Im currently building a 170 Hyper-Pac 1960 Valiant for my self. Also, how did it effect fuel mileage??I already have a elec.ign. and supersix intake(but no carb) and am planning a larger exaust. Thanks in advance for any info.

This setup is on a bone-stock '61 Valiant, 170 automatic, highway gears.

I am really amazed at the difference. Compared to the original Carter BBS one barrel, this thing flies for what it is. I can jump into traffic without fear of getting squashed in the process now.

I still have some tinkering to do with the throttle linkage (I removed the original bell crank linkage for a cable type setup), and some tuning with the carb (came off a 225, probably a little rich for a 170), but overall I am really pleased.

I have no idea about the gas mileage difference yet, as I'm having a hard time keeping my foot out of it!

The biggest problem with a stock slant is the puny 1bbl and exhaust, IMHO. More induction/exh gets you big gains...

Cool beans,

I agree Lou,
My first experience with a modified slant was when I installed a Proline dual weber and clifford headers on my truck, the difference was night and day.

yea, i agree. i did a super six swap and a mopar header and it was better, but i just did a 2.5" off the header and i still have the old mismatched 2.25" flowmaster and 2" tailpipe, but just swaping from the 1 7/8" pipe off the header to the 2.5" was amazing. i cant wait to make it all 2.5". i dont know how much more it will give but i cant hurt.

what i can say is that the car ran just as fast on a warm humid day with the bigger exhaust as a nice cool optimal day with the small exhaust, so need less to say im itching for the nice cooler fall weather to get here now. my updates have been posted in the virtual dragstrip section.

Post subject:  /6

It's good to hear that all is not lost when sticking to a /6.

I have a 72 Swinger with a /6 225 + 904. It's perky, but by no means fast. I seriously considered swapping out the entire affair for a 383, but I decided (for fuel economy, since it's my driver) to stick to the /6. I have a line on a complete super-6 with kickdown. Anybody know what kind of improvement this will make @ the wheels with the exhaust modifications the poster is refering to?

Yeah my Duster is the same way. Since it has that 2.76 rear it is sluggish getting up. It really doesn't get all of its power until you get over 60 MPH. Then it really starts to go. It impressed my Dad when he first drove it on the freeway. He had drove my uncles D-150 and it had given him the impression that slants were basically junk with little or no power. My Duster changed his mind. He claims to have gotten it up to 110 MPH on the freeway but since the speedo goes to only 100, I am really not sure if he got it up that fast.

I put a 2 1/2" exhaust in my Valiant, hooked up to a header and I have to agree with you. I used a raven welded muffler and now my car sounds great. :)

i got a great deal on my super six. there was this old 65 dart at the local junkyard that had a trunk full of parts. head, newly rebuilt carb still in the box, brand nes in the box water pump and fuel pump, brand nex timing set, even a timing gun, brand nex oil filter, spark plugs and a ton of other stuff. the guy mustve just gave up and thrown everything he got for it in the trunk and junked it. so i just shoved everything but the head into a box i found on the ground and gave it to my friend to carry. then i grabbed the super six assembly that still had a matching carb on it. (it matches the rebuilt one perfectly). i got everything for $50 :D

I took my '64 out on the road yesterday for the first time since the Super Six conversion. There is a distinct difference in low end torque. Throttle response is much improved and the seat-of-the-pants feel is great. I'm also running a stock exhaust and will be until I rebuild the engine next year. I just ordered one of Doug's castings, but haven't decided if I will use two of them, or use the blocked-off stock manifold for the rear cylinders.

dont even go by the outer diameter of the puny headpipe, check inside where they welded the pipe to the flange, I had a ring in there that a .50 cent piece couldnt pass through! Im buying a flange today and a 2.5 mandrel 90 and am going welding this weekend. I already got a 2.5 exhaust and muff (1/2 of my 451 exhaust) and it sounds pretty mean going through that sewer pipe and spin-tech muffler.

I'm at work so I can't go out side and measure. What size is that exhaust flange bolt center to bolt center? Or even easier for me where can I get one off of the net? I'm fixing to Super Six my 75 Valiant next days off and want the parts there when I get home.
Thanks Mike

This is encouraging because this is the next modification I have planned for my little six popper.
