Heya, I am curious how sturdy the bottom end is in a 225 /6. How much Nitros can be applied (Ballpark here, it's a street driven machine) with relative safety, without using aftermarket bottom end components. The /6 in question will be a 1972 225 -w- a super-6 & 2"+ exhaust. The Transmission is a 904, and the rear is a little 7.25. |

I have heard that the bottom end of the slant is tougher than most V-8s, that is why they are so hard to kill. I read somewhere that it is rated for 6,000 RPM |

One of the world's authorities, Mike Jeffrey, said that he ran about 375 total HP (about 100HP shot of N2O) was fine with stock rods/crank. He probably had forged pistons. Steve Magnante ran up to 100HP shot w/ cast pistons and stock bottom end. Lou |

Heh, Yea, I know all about how week the 7.25 is. I have an 8.25 with 3.21 trac on the way, and heavy duty rear springs. Where do I get forged slugs that don't cost the farm? I know the ol slant has a tough bottom end, but I was unsure how it'd take spray. From what everybody seems to say, about a 100 shot should do just what I want |

I believe a slat with stock pistons could handle 100 hp safely. I just assembled a "mule" motor, to find out just how much the cast pistons can take. Just make sure you stay out of detonation. Don't sell that 7 1/4 rear short. I ran a 3.91 suregrip during the 2002-2003 racing seasons, running mid to high 13's, in a 3200 lb car. That rear has been in 4 different cars, and never broke. |

I am not trying to sell it Short. I have heard that the 7.25 is a generally weak(er) Rear end, and at the advice of several reliable sources, located a rear that's considered more stout. I know that the 8.25 isn't a panacea for breakage problems, but most consider it a good step up. I don't have nearly enough experience with Mopar Gears to begin to know "Exactly" what's best. My family is traditionally a Ford & Dodge family (and I must confess we also own a 2001 ranger 4x4 Xcab which we love too!) , and the 9" ford is familiar to me. I know how stout they are, and can be built up to be. I would like to find a MOPAR rear end for my Swinger that is as stout as the 9 iron, without the trouble of swapping in a ford 9. I guess I should/could have fielded a question about WHICH rear end I really want. In the short term, the dart will have less than 150 HP @ the wheels, but eventually I will be putting Spray &/or Forced induction to work for me, and I want to avoid any loud noises from the pumpkin. |

Naturally, the larger the ring gear/bearings/components in a given differential are, the heartier it is going to be. Charlie is right, though... Don't just cast off something as "junk" cause that's what you heard. Most people have traditionally cast the slant six off as "junk" in favor of a more powerful V8. Hell, the 350 shivvy motor is junk, but look at the millions of myrmidons who run that... I run mid 15's with the Duster on a bone stock, open leg 7.25 w/ 3.23's with no problems whatsoever... The launch is soft (for now), and that's what saves it. When/if it nukes, I'll cross that bridge then. meantime, I dig its lightness - I have installed light components wherever possible on this car. As soon as I can swing the 'glass front cap, it's coming, too. D/W |

I cut a donut in the wal-mart parking lot with my Duster and now my 7 1/4 makes a howling noise under hard acceleration. I love p#@*ing off a bunch of bowtie lovers. They think their 350's can blow a Hemi off the road. A vortec 350 can't even get past the 400M in my truck and it is strangled with emissions controls. Try telling the guys on Horsepower TV that the 350 is junk, they would probably try to fight you. I have finished venting my frustrations for now. I am just tired of Mopars, especially Slants getting ignored. They have taken a verbal beating and have been stereotyped for too long. Even though Mopar has some of the best engineered engines ever made, people simply dismiss them as junk. I would like to see a Chevy engine go through the abuse that some Slants and LA smallblocks go through.IF that doesn't say something about the engineering and build quality of these engines, then I don't know what does. |
