last night i was doing my final cleaning of my bbd and noticed a lot of flash in it so i went out to the shed and grabbed a rounded file and started removing it got it all smoothed out in the carb. But now i am wondering if what i did was a bad thing i'm thinking it should stop turbulence of fuel and air but at the same time i'm hoping i didn't just ruin a perfectly good carb

I did just about the same, but ended up screwing the carb up

I think that what I did wrong was removing too much outta the throat, so the throttle lever wouldn't close as tight as it should. Never got a decent idling after my "adventure"

I bought a BBD off of a fellow that was smoothed out, he tested it on a 318 i think and it ran pretty good on a slantsix, but it didnt run any better or worse than a regular BBD did

waist of money on my behalf, and a waist of time on yours if you ask me

as long as you didn't take off too much metal (cutting into the fuel bowl, etc); or, caused a problem with the butterfly not fitting... You've done no harm.

In fact, this is one of the things done to "improve" stock carbs for racing. It's also one of the selling point used by Barry Grant for their Demon carbs -- since they do the casting in a way so as to not have these casting lines anywhere in the air-flow path.

There's usually a lot of flash or casting marks that the factory leaves in there, simply because it doesn't matter for their purposes. You can get slightly higher flow by removing all the flash and smoothing out the air-horn and venturi. Of course, now you've changed the airflow characteristics of the carb; and, may need to re-jet.

Another thing to be aware of, before you go off and polish the carb... Carbs are generally made of cast Zinc (not sure about the BBD....) The factory puts a coating on them to keep the Zinc from corroding. You've removed the coating...

I think the bbd is aluminum but could be wrong on that but it looked alluminum and just out of curiosity what did the bbd rate 300 or 350 cfm or smaller then that

...believe the BBD main body is zinc die-cast...

if it is then the coating is gone through most of the carb because i attacked the whole thing with some sand paper but only ground away a little bit so i hope it was thick

The coating is (I believe) electroplated on. It's not all that thick... It's not a big deal though, you can coat the outside of the carb with just about any fuel proof spray coating.

the outside has been painted gold it's just the inside that is exposed
