Post subject:  Forged Crank

I need a forged crank for my hypo slant 6 project, and there are few of these things in my neck of the woods. Anyone out there have a good used or NOS forged crank for a 225? Can anyone remind me of which cars and trucks had the forged cranks, before changing to cast iron? Thanks everyone!

Sure....ALL slants built before 1975 were forged cranks. (To be honest, it might be before '76, but I can never remember if the 75's were forged, or that was the chang-over year.)

I suggest a donor 225 between '68 and '74.

If he's keeping the original tranny, he'll need a pre-67 or a 68-75 with a spacer ring...

Post subject:  steel crank

I never would have guessed that Autozone would have a reconditioned steel crank, to original specs, for less than $200 with bearing kit. I'll probably axe the bearing kit in favor of better hypo components. Has anyone had any experience with Autozone's steel crank? Is this crank compatible with either a 1971 or 72 225 block?

Hmmm....interesting.....A "reconditioned crank", to "original specs". I wonder how they do that? Weld-up and regrind?

If it were me, I think I'd ask a couple very pointed questions. Like; WHAT, EXACTLY, is "original specs"? Original specs could be -.010" or
-.020" undersize.

I COULD be a bit paranoid, though.

Yep, I asked these questions. It apparently is .000, which I presume is to add material and turn it to specs.

Actually, as long as it wasn't pulled out of the 'abuser' special they may have mic'ed it and found it in tolerance and shined it up....

The forged crank after 200K in my duster was well within spec on the main and rod journals so I shined it up with some 400 grit emery cloth, and checked it a second time with a mic, and it currently hasn't let me down in the last 23K on the clock.... Heck even the cam bearings had 'almost no wear' on them too...if the bores hadn't been ready for 'the next' piston size, I probably could've gotten away with a hone, re-ring, and new crank bearings...

I'm a little leary of Autozone though, they have 'two' versions of crank kits...I'm not sure of how good the $189 version is over the $252 version.... My local NAPA gets good ones for about the $250 price (will be going there soon with a grenaded '74 crank core...)
