Since replacing the main & rod bearings in my 150K+ 80 Aspen, the engine is now using less oil. I pulled the OEM bearings with 0.0035 to 0.0040 measured rod clearance. New bearings gave me just under 0.0020. I was using roughly 500 miles/quart of Mobil I 10/30. I haven't nailed it down yet, but this has at least doubled. Oh, yes, I do have 3 slight leaks: the oil pressure gauge, rear main seal ( I didn't R&R) and my oil cooler adapter. So what my real oil consumption is, I do not know. But it has markedly improved. New, the car used maybe 1/2 quart in 3000 miles. Observation: less oil being thrown on the cylinder walls = less oil consumption.

My guess is the rear main seal is leaking less. I saw a big change in rear main leakage when I went back down to 60 psi max oil pressure from 85 psi (hi press spring).

0.002" is fairly high for a Slant, and 0.004 is way too much.

Good result in any case - congrats!

I didn't change the rear main bearing or seal and the oil pressure remains unchanged @ 50 psi (TRW high volume pump). So, it most is due to less oil being thrown around inside the engine.
