Absolute Frustration!

What is the proper technique for removing the parking brake cables from the backing plates?
... I have the breaks disassembled, and I was planning on putting the backing plates in my media-blaster, but I am having trouble getting the cables out!
HEEELP!! PA-PA-PA-PLEEEASE!

The brake cables are held to the backing plates by a sort of multi-fingered spring retainer. Easiest way to release them is to get a small worm-drive hose clamp of the size range appropriate to the spring retainer, unscrew the clamp all the way so it's open-sided, put it around the multi-fingered spring retainer, and tighten the clamp til all of the retainer's fingers are compressed...then give a good yank on the cable and it should come out of the backing plate._________________ 一期一会

| Another trick that always worked for me is slipping a 1/2 box end wrench over the cable. It's about the right size to compress the retaining tabs as you push it toward the backing plate.

Dan, the manual I have states that the axel bearings should come right out... but I've tried using the end of the axel to pry them out, a slide hammer, (and a puller, but I couldn't figure how to apply it to the end of the housing) ...
Any more amazing insight? I know you have quite a library, my manual is not of the FSM type; It's a college dictionary sized book covering all MOPARs from 1968-77

You can cut the old ones out with a cold chisel. Just stay away from the housing with the sharp edge of your chisel.

Fraid I haven't got any rabbits to pull out of hats on this one. It's been, ummmm...ten or eleven years since I had to mess with any rear axle bearings!
But you should definitely go to this thread and get a real factory manual._________________ 一期一会

I have removed them with a cold chisel, and it works. The factory manual even suggests this with the C clip 8 1/4" rear. The goal is to just get it out of there, and it doesn;t matter how many pieces it is in after it is removed. I think the manual suggests first distorting the race so the bearings fall out, and then cutting the race into about 3 pieces with the chisel.

You need a BIG slide hammer to get the wheel bearings out.
I changed some on a 9.25 rear. My 5lb wouldn't do it, I had to borrow a 10lb.

So I finally stopped putting off the organization of the shop; and in the prosess, found the BEST tool EVER (for now) : An Axel Bearing Puller !
onto the end of the slide hammer (12lb) it went, and PRESTO!
The right tool for the job is awful nice sometimes...
