I have a '69 Dart GT 225/6, super-six setup, auto, 7-1/4 Sure Grip rear. Are there clutch fans available that would be a direct swap for my non-clutch fan? If so what cars would be good to check for donor fans? Or does anyone recommend a flex-fan instead?

It's really hard to find a clutch fan that'll fit in front of the long slant-6 in an A-body application. It has been done, but you have to be really choosy (and take your tape measure to the wrecking yard).

Flex fans are, on balance, not helpful. They are noisy and have a poor safety record.

Electric fans are terrific if you can find one to fit.

See threads Here and Here.

You can buy the clutch new over the counter, but the fan itself is the hard part to find... If your junkyard has a few Volares or Aspens, check under the hood I have found a fair amount of 7 blade fixed, and 5 bladed clutch fans under the hoods of those guys (slant six and A/C powered).

good luck,

Thanks for the reply's. I don't "need" one. I just thought it might take a little load off the engine. I like to tinker with the Dart and after reading the mpg posts I got to thinking about a friend who put a flex fan on an old chevy and claimed his mileage and seat of the pants power went up a little. Maybe just felt faster to him because it was louder than before.

Electric Fans draw about 10amps.

So with the lights on, and idling with an old low-amp alternator you're going to be discharging.......... (and even worse if the heater fan is on)

Seems I remember somebody on this board got a clutch fan from a Mercedes or BMW and put it on their A body. If the clutch and fan assembly are thin enough and the four bolts line up with the water pump, it will should work.
