Green like Kermit

I'm hoping that someone can set me in the right direction. I have a 66 Coronet 4-door that I just bought back from a fellow I sold it to a few years ago. I have extremely limited knowledge about the workings of engines, but intend to learn (though I don't know from where, as I don't know any car people either).
The body is in almost perfect shape and the car runs well enough that I'm going to make it my daily driver for the summer. Does need some work, as the exhaust maniford is cracked (I'm told) etc. I would like to turn the currently gutless engine into a more high-powered /6 but have no idea even where to begin.
Can anyone set me in the right direction (a book, a website, tons of free technical advice) on how I should start this process. I don't need a car every day and can even go 3 or 4 without, but don't want to do anything serious like yank the engine that will leave me car-less for any length of time. Also have no garage in which to do the work, so it'll be sunny weather fix-ups only.
Any direction appreciated.

Welcome to our slanted world!
Read the articles section here and search the forum for posts on tuning what you have. Then look at bolt-on upgrades to the ignition, intake, and exhaust. And try to cultivate a friend with a place to work - then have fun!

For the manifold Doug has some nice manifolds to boost the hp on the slant six.

Well, I think you found "a website with tons of free technical advice". . . here and at the slantsix.com site. You need to use the seach function and do some reading. I would search for valve adjustment, tune-up & timing advance or advance curve because this is what you need to start with.
With a basic engine tune-up, advancing the timing and making sure the distributor advance is working well (read: lots of initual & a fast curve rate)a SL6 will wake-up. Also adjust the valves and carb accelerator pump / jetting to get even more pep.
So pick one of these topics, use the site's search and read-up, post / ask questions so you feel good about doing the task and go for it! Knock-out a tune-up then move to let's say, a valve adjustment using the same process.
You will be doing the "big stuff" before you know it!
