I got a /6 engine in a trade and would like to build a drag race t-bucket altered for nostalgia racing and maybe a little bracket racing. I haven't played with MoPars since I sold my 65 Barracuda some years back and would like some input as to what parts to use for the drive train. I'm on a tight budget-almost ready to retire-and just want to have some fun. I'm building the frame and full cage at home. I'm on a mission to find parts now. Any ideas as to what mods I can do to the engine, which auto trans (727?) to use would be very helpful. Thanks! :!:

Buzzard,

Welcome to the site! Sounds like a great project, and one I've thought about myself, on occasion.

Please start with the "search" function on this site to find engine buildup info, then start asking questions. There was a thread started a while ago with "successful" engine combos for different uses and build level.

You will definitely want a 904. Lighter, cheaper, easier to find, and less power hugry than a 727. They are pretty much bulletproof behind a Slant, unless you use a lot of nitrous or boost.

Happy building,

Lou

Howdy, been there, doin' that. :D
The (real, not NHRA) nostalgia circuits are growing fast and are a blast. Several of the smaller series are really dedicated to the effort.
I'm in SoCal, presently running the ANRA series, the Eagle Field series, Dragfest & the Antique Nat's with our HA/GR (see my signature links).
Where'll you be running?

You can get quite a bit of fun out of simply good head work, a decent cam and carb(s) with the slant.
Lou's right on about the 904, solid trans.

Welcome to the forum, Buzzard II! Please remember to feed our hungry gas-feet with some images in the form of photos during your building process!

I live in northern New Jersey, so after the car is built I will probably race in this area. After I retire I plan to travel with the race caqr in tow. Hope to see many of you in the future! This web site is GREAT! Bob Lintner :D

Hey, Bob. Where will you race, Island Dragway or Englishtown? Island used to be my home track.

I'll go back to Island (The Patch) to race. We always got treated good there! Mrs. K and Cathy and the entire crew always were A-Plus! Not like that F-ing S-hole Raceway Park! And the food at Island was always better! Hope you're enjoying Florida. Jeff Holz and I raced his red/white coves 61 fuely vette in street et until about 15 years ago. It got to be worth more restored. Stay in touch!

I went on a trip up north in 2006, and stopped at the Cabbage Patch, with my 66 Cuda, for a visit. Was hard to believe, Hank was still the announcer, and Duke was the tech inspector. They have been there since the sixties. I haven't raced there since 1985, but there were many of the same races, and cars. It was like going back in time.

I'm pretty sure I know Jeff, the name sounds famailia. I ran a 65 Valiant with a slant six, in Stock eliminator and street bracket. A 65 Valiant with a 273 in Heavy bracket, and a 68 Merc cougar with a 440 in Pro/Super Pro. The Cougar was named "Mousetrap", and the valiants were "Charlies Angel".

Charlie,
This is like going back in time! The track surface was repaved awhile back and the water has stopped coming thru to the track surface. No more interesting passes! It's good that Island is a racers track, Raceway Park still plays favorites. Island lets the kids run thru muffers on friday nights now. I gues they are moving up with the times a little. I think thats because of Cathys husband Tony. Bob :D

I knew Kathy when she was a youn'un, and when I was up there, their daughter was driving a dragster. Time sure flies. Say hello to Jeff, and ask him if he remembers me. I used to hang out with Billy Nees, Angelo Kariotakis (the Hairy Greek) and Frank Duplissis.

Charlie,
I remember Cathy when she was kinda young too! I guess we're really dating ourselves! I'll tell Jeff (AKA Doc) when I talk to him. My wife and I are going away for a long weekend -wed morning-be back monday. It sure must be nice to wake up in a state other than NJ. I remember Billy Nees too! Bob

Hi again Buzzard II, for some input and ideas, take a look at the slantsix senior dragster project.

Olaf,
I've seen the dragster and it's real neat! I've looked at it a few times and am getting some ideas. I'm planning to use a t-bucket body with turtledeck and a home made 2 x 3 x 3/16 frame. I'm still scrounging parts and check swap meets.
thanks! Bob Lintner

Bob, I considered doing something like that, years ago. and ran into this situation. The length of a slant six with auto trans, in a short wheel base car, can create problems. A 904 trans has less power lose and weight then a 727. There used to be "shorty" kits for a 727, and I think some truck 727's are short, also. You might also be able to get a custom "shorty" kit for the 904. Might want to contact Frank (66acuda), I think he is going to have one made. Just something to consider.
