What's the best way to adjust the shift points on my tranny? I remember doing this years ago on a 'flite, and if I can recall, there was an adjusting bolt on the driver's side of the tranny, behind the linkage. If that is it, should it be loosened or tightened? Trying to get the gears to hold out longer, because currently, it's in third, and the torque converter's already locked up by 23 miles per hour!!! Talk about aggervating. The car that I adjusted once before would shift into third (and jerk your head) at 50 miles per hour. That one felt like it had a kit in it, but it did;nt. That was a little too held out. Looking for a happy medium. Thanks. Al.

adjust the kickdown linkage so that its all the way forward at WOT (wide open throttle) you can also re-adjust your bands if you want, thats what the "adjuster" by the linkages on the transmission is.

Your transmission has a lock-up torque converter? You can get a different (I think stiffer) spring to put in the lock-up valve from your transmission shop. This will raise the lock-up speed to 40-45 MPH. Much nicer than 23 MPH.

Yes, if the kick-down rod is adjusted a bit too long it will hang in gear and when it finally does shift it will jerk your head.

Errrr.... the kickdown lever on the trans should be pushed all the way back (towards the rear of the car) at WOT.

If that does not help, time to run some pressure checks on the trans, sounds like the line pressure setting is set to high. You will have to drop the trans pan in order to adjust that.
A factory service manual outlines how this adjustment is done.

The tip about using a stiffer spring in the lock-up valve is also good.
Make sure the kickdown and main line pressure setting is correct and then adjust the converter's lock-up point by swapping or shimming-up that spring.

Got it! Kickdown was WAY forward. Adjusted it toward the rear of the car and it shifts 100% better now. It's much more tolerable to drive. Thanks to everyone who replied!
