Okay, so usually I don't go for gimmicky products that claim amazing results, specail engine treatments, fuel treatments, all that. Especially when a 12oz bottle is $27.99. But last week schucks had a sale on zmax for 10 bucks so I tried it, and I got to say that after it worked through the system, I went from 13mpg to 15mpg after just one tank.

Premium in my area is $2.77 a gallon, so every little bit helps!

Check the milage, over several tanks, and then report. One tank, is not enough, to tell. I made a trip, that was about 200 miles, in my Polara. I hade never checked the fuel milage. Filled the tank before leaving, and refilled after I got there. I got about 21 mpg. After returning home, refilled again. Got about 16 mpg. There are too many variables. Different route, different amount of traffic, etc. Sorry, I just don't believe in "snake oil"
Wasn't Z-Max, the company that, had the TV add, where they put Z-Max in the engine, drove awhile, then drained out all the oil, and drove the car that way for a few hours , with no oil? Then had the disclaimer, "not to do this in your own car"?

Whatever mileage improvement you think you saw, didn't actually happen. There are far too many variables between the conditions under which you measured the mileage on the "before" tank and those under which you measured the "after" tank for the claim of going from 13mpg to 15mpg to be anything but noise. What's more, most of these "engine treatment" additives are injurious or highly injurious to your engine.

What belongs in your crankcase is oil—and only oil.

You've mentioned being unhappy with your fuel economy, and it's tempting to believe in magic-in-a-bottle, but the better idea is to spend your time and money fixing the problems causing your low mileage.

Did anyone else notice that the old snake oil infomercials always used chrysler engines for their abuse. There was the fire truck that had all its oil drain and the valve cover was removed and then they sprayed the moving rockers with a fire hose. Of course it had a slant in it. There was another where they removed the oil pan poured sand on the rockers ran it and then cut the upper rad hose that one was a solid lifter 273. And the car they drove with no oil was a viper.

And the slant-6 was the demo engine of choice at flea markets and swap meets. Yeah, real amazing, a slant-6 sits and idles without oil. I used to work my way to the front of the crowd and heckle the guy "Wow, amazing, you got an engine with solid lifters to run without oil!" The response was always "Uh...? What's lifted?".

(And if they didn't have the engine on a stand, they had a bearing-on-a-torque-bar "tester"...it's always something...)

I like the ad I saw with an engine "encased in ice". Sure, it was. They had made a box out of slabs of ice around the engine. Think igloo.

I agree that most add-ins are bogus, but my car does run much quieter with "engine restorer" that comes in that silver can. not sure why or what causes this, but it does run noticably quieter

Bleach is very slippery if you pour it on your hands and rub them together. But, you probably don't want to pour bleach on your hands.

Yep, just as the heavy Chlorine content in many of these "engine restore" or "engine treatment" type additives is doing exactly the same thing to your bearings.

I went to a live BG oil additive Demo/Crawfish boil in Lafayette Louisiana about 20 years ago. The engine? A Slant of course. I think the BG guy let it idle for about 40 minutes after draining the BG treated oil out of it. We ate crawfish and drank beer and came back out to the still perfectly running engine very impressed. Everybody was oohing and ahhing about it but I put as much credit on the toughness of the Slant as they did the value of the oil additive. I wasn't surprised a bit.

And that goes for high mileage motor oil as well. You can standard oil for a long time, and things will only get a little worse. Go w/ the high mileage stuff and things will be better for a little bit, but then often rapidly fall apart.

Buy that man a beer!

instead of buying high dollar additive to your oil, run a heavier weight oil....for example 20/50. at least for the summer....
