Over the weekend I was lucky enough to pick up a 78 Volare parts car for my daughters Volare for $50,the seller said the car ran but he had lost the keys and butchered the steering column and ignition switch. I would like to start the car to be able to move it around the yard and check the condition of the engine. My question is ,how would I go about "hot wiring"the car to get it to start? As always your help and advice is appreciated,Thanks.

Get a wiring diagram and you can figure it out.

Hotwiring it is no problem. The real challenge will be unlocking the steering wheel...

...the simplest thing in this case is usually to remove the steering wheel and either disassemble and defeat the interlock mechanism, or simply remove the lock cylinder (depending on how butchered it is). You may even be able to remove the tumblers from the lock cyl and re-install it so you can start it from the column without even using a key until you can get it all fixed and get a new lock cylinder. ...or then there's the cheesy screwdriver method.

The best way to replace the lock is to follow the factory method or removing everything, but since you can't turn it to RUN to depress the pin holding it in, just drill down through the hole. It ruins the lock, but replacements are inexpensive.

The fastest way is to use a slide hammer - brutal, but the only time I tried it resulted in no damage to the column.

If you can steer, then all you need is to provide IGN and cranking power. Since one of the FLD connections on the alt goes to IGN, just jumper the BAT terminal to the correct FLD lead (blue?). If unsure, unplug the voltage regulator to avoid damage and one or the other will provide power to the ignition system.

To crank, notice that usually one pin on the starter relay is at an angle to the others - that (dark-green?) powers the solenoid; the solenoid grounds through the neutral safety (brown-yellow? or dark green?).

Alternatively, if you have an ignitions switch + lock from a similar model, just plug it into wide flat connector near the column under the dash in place of the trashed one and us it.

I dont think yall understand, the column is destroyed, the interlock is missing and the switch(not just the tumbler) has been pryed apart, steering is not a problem I just want to get the car started so I can move it and check the condition of the engine.Im just not sure how jump the wires on a dual ballast electronic ignition to get spark.I tried running a wire from the battery to the ballast and got juice at one terminal on the ign.module plug but no fire to the plugs.I guess I could find a wiring diagram and just rewire it ,I was just hoping someone here had been through this before.Im not lazy, just not wanting to spend alot of time on a parts car.Thanks.
