when was the last time you adjusted the valves? that's probaly last on the list, but it does help. next, adjust your carb, timing. or rebuild.

Sounds, to me, like the accelerator pump in the carb is not working, properly.

i'd check things like the fuel filter, timing, plugs/plug wires, dwell. basically a real complete tune up, set your air idle screw with a vacuum gauge. if you have uneven idle or miss that goes away with rpms, check your valve lash and correct as needed.

while doing all this you can check over the carb...look for leaky gaskets, check accelertor pump function that sort of thing. let us know how it goes.

I had this same problem a few months ago. It wound up being a loose carb base plate. Every time I'd put the car in gear, too much air would get in and lean the carb out until it died.

Duster Idiot showed me a good way to check for leaks. Take off your air cleaner and just spray some carb cleaner/starter around where the gaskets/seals are and if the car revs up then whatever gasket or seal you are spraying by is probably got a leak.

Put your hand over the top of the air cleaner, blocking it off. It should die immediately. If it keeps on chugging, you have got a vacuum leak.
