Hello all This is my first post here and I am looking for some good advice on camshaft choice. I have a 73 Duster with the original 225 and 904. I am having the engine rebuilt with shaved head .60 to .70 off, 1.7,1.44 SI valves, 2bbl intake with holley rebuild carter bbd. Maybe a set of Dutra duals or a header. Car has 3.23:1 rearend. I was also going to rebuild the tranny while it's out. Have a HP rebuild hit and a transgo TF-1 reprogramming kit going in.

Was looking at the isky 152116 cam 264 duration with .448 lift. Wondering if this will be too much cam for my application or not enough. Will I need a higher stall converter? Was looking at a boss hog 2200-2800 stall.

Thanks in advance

That cam should work perfectly with about 2400-2800 stall and that motor/car setup. BUT, that "boss hogg" converter will only stall around 1800-2000 on a Slant 6. You would need a 10" converter. Midwest converters can set you up with a nice custom converter for around $350.

I wouldn't trust those Alabama converters anyway.

Every engine build-up and presonal preferences makes this a hard question.
In general, the isky 264 is pretty good but it may kill-off some of the low end you need around town.
Do you want tight lash settings and a smooth idle?

I have a similar build in a lighter 5 speed car. I used a Comp 264(it was free) and wish I had more cam. Id go with the Isky.

I do no city driving. My car idles like a kitten.

Thanks for the advice. Since Iam not going to be racing and just want to wake up the slant a little. I had a 69 Dart with a slant back when and It would beat 318's no problem. Since doc thinks it may be a little much I may go isky 256. Gets the power down lower in the rpm's and I won't have to spend loads of $$ on a new torque converter. SMR wanted 500 Cdn for a high stall one.

Any further comments appreciated.

You do not want a stock size 11" converter, but a 10" converter, with plenty of stall. I do not recommend TCI, which used the wrong number of splines in my T.C., and then, after I had to remove it and return it to them, declared they could not build a 10" converter with only 18 splines. All this cost me about $500+ in unnecessary expense, and I still have to install a 3,500 stall 10" t.c. when I receive it from Rick Pare' in Washington state.
