I just recently fell onto a free turbo buick and was planning on robbing the turbo, carb, and any other parts i want and then send it to the big junkyard in the sky. I dont know what year or type of buick, but i think its an early 80's regal. I havent looked at it yet so im not sure if its a draw through or a blow through. what i need help with is how to do the manifold and what to do for fuel delivery. as seen somewhere else in this forum, i might need to use a "J" pipe. Im guessing that it needs to be stainless, is there anywhere online where I could get some prebent SS and the correct ends? If i go with a drawthrough set up will i need increased fuel pressure or will the stock pump work? i know i will need to match (or be higher) than the amount of boost with a blow through.

I am pretty sure those are all draw throughs. There are a few guys who have put those on and I think there may be a tech article somewhere on it. I may have an old one I can post.

draw thru can run a stock mechanical pump but please read what i posted on another string ....

the draw thru has some basic engineering flaws....they do have a tendency to ice up below 50 F ambient. also you can quickly over-carb a draw thru, with a draw thru, you are actually carburating each cylinder with the total boosted cfm of the total carb since the intake is actually feeding its full preassure to each cylinder one at a time. you will also have to rejett and also use a bigger excelerator pump. finally, with a draw thru, you need to have the fuel/air mix flow always in a gravity situation, hard to do since the coil of the compressor side requires the mix to go uphill as it travels around the housing so you will have fuel puddling. Truly, the blow thru is the best setup. alot less modifications anld also a lot less issues. grt

hope this helps

the only reason that i am planning on doing the drawthrough set up is because 1) thats the way the buick is set up, and 2) thats the way it would have been done in 69 (the year my truck was made) so that i can keep with the 60's push/race truck vibe i want. thanks for the information about thee set ups and hope to learn more befor i start. thanks!

From '78 to '83 Buick used a drawthru-carbed setup, from '84 - '85, they used a drawthru-EFI setup and from '86 on, it was a blowthru-EFI setup. All of the setups had the turbo mounted on top of the intake manifold. You can duplicate that setup on the \6. I believe the articules section has pictures of a setup done that way.

The carb was a special 800cfm Rochester Q-jet that had the secondaries pinned so it would only flow 650cfm. This carb also had the power circuit referenced to the intake manifold, this allows the carb to more easily control the mixture when in boost. Without excess jetting. The carbs plenum is heated by water so carb icing is not a major problem.

Some of the modification that the buick guys do, is remove that aforementioned pin from the secondaries and add water injection. Some of those guys have those big ole Regals running in the 13's at 18lbs of boost. Not bad for supposedly outdated technology...
