I've read 'lean burn" about Chrysler stock electronic ignition but don't understand what it means.
My application- I pulled a Super Six set up off a 79 Volare and a friend put an electronic set up on my 62 Valiant, 225 /6.
How would lean burn affect my engine?

THANKS,
Mike

Chrysler's Electronic Lean Burn system was the US auto industry's first attempt at an engine management system designed to reduce exhaust toxicity. It consisted of a carburetor set up to provide extremely lean mixtures (16:1 to 18:1) compared to conventional carburetion's mixture range of between 12:1 and 14:1. The key to being able to run such lean mixtures was serious control of the ignition timing, which was carried out by a primitive (by modern standards) computer that looked at throttle position, engine vacuum, and some other parameters to determine ignition advance.

Compared to the piecemeal, toss-it-on-and-pray emission control devices that came before, Lean Burn was a big advance in both driveability and emissions performance. It allowed many Chrysler products to pass Federal emission requirements in '76-'77 without the use of catalytic converters, which were at the time expensive and troublesome.

But, Lean Burn was itself no jewel of hands-off reliability, nor a paragon of excellent driveability. It worked less badly than most of what GM and Ford did. But, carburetors and everything that goes with them are inherently incapable of delivering the kind of consistent precision required to have low emissions and good performance. And the stone-age sensors and computer lacked the durability or precision to do anything but get the engine into the general ballpark of emissions compliance when the whole system was brand new. Nowtimes, Lean Burn is a driveability and performance nightmare from which you can wake up only by removing the Lean Burn components and going back to a conventionally-controlled ignition system (i.e., a distributor with vacuum and mechanical advance systems and a conventional carburetor).

If there is no "Spark Control Computer" or "Electronic Lean Burn" computer hanging off the side of the air cleaner you got off the 2bbl setup, you don't have Lean Burn.

Thanks for the info.
I usually screw things up and ask questions later and I'm not a joiner usually. So thanks to all (on this Slant Six Forum) for making it painless and worth the price of admission.
