After doing some tuning on my '65 Valiant yesterday, today it was hesitating terribly on startup and at the bottom of each shift. I went back to what I had done in the tuning. One thing was to set the idle mixture for max vacuum. First off I turned the screw out a quarter turn, and that eliminated 3/4 of the hesitation.

Does this mean I have an evil spirit in my engine?

No, it's most likely that you have an accelerator pump that isn't 100%.

Thanks. But actually I was wondering whether it's to be expected that idle mixture would effect a hesitation that much.

Still, how does one go about adjusting the accelerator? I've never seen or heard instructions about it.
