Hey guys, Ive been doing as much reading as I can on trying to figure what would be a good cam for my application and I guess I dont really know enough about camshaft selection to make a educated decision and I dont want to spend the money and be very dissapointed. So here is what I am planning, I have a 1974 Plymouth Duster with a 225 Slant six that was rebuilt less than 15,000miles ago. I have mildy ported the head, had it shaved for mild compression, I bought an Offy 4bbl intake with a 390 Holley, and headers. (if you have some for sale, please let me know) I am also going to be upgrading the ignition to MSD. My transmission is a recently rebuilt 904 with what I believe is a stock converter, and the guy said had shift kit in it... but I have no way of confirming this, although he had this behind a higher performance slant himself. And finally out back I have an 8 1\4 with 3.21 gears. SO basically my question is what cam do you guys think would be a good well rounded (as far as performance\driveability go) street cam for this application? I appreciate the help.

A 390 carb will run out of air flow just past 5500 RPM so you really don't need a lot of cam to suppot that.
How high do you want to rev the engine?

I would have to disagree with that Doug.

I've turned mine 6200 with a 390 on it.

With a stock torque converter, you are pretty limited. The Erson 270 deg cam available from summit (220@0.050" and 0.465" lift) looks like it would be great for a stock converter and near stock compression or a bit higher. I have been meaning to try that myself. Otherwise, a stock cam is probably fine, or a MP 244 if you can find one. Don't waste your money on a COMP 252 as that is almost stock specs.

But was the engine making any power at 6200 or were you just "wringing it out" to get to the finish line?

The CFM chart I have shows 225 cid at 6000 RPM uses 391 cfm.
I am not sure what VE rating they use for the chart but that is the variable. What is the VE of your engine? (a smart a$$ question  )

No Doug, it will still make power up there, not just hang on for the stripe.

As far as VE, that information never leaves Nebraska. Mike figures that the fewer secrets he tells me, the less of his stuff winds up on the Internet.

This is the cam right? I just wanted to make sure haha, I dont want to screw it up some how. Hey I was thinking, will I need to replace the bearings also? Will I have to break this in like I did when the engine was brand new? Thanks again.

Yep, that's the one I was talking about. See what they recommend for a centerline and advance it 2-4 degrees from there.

You need to break in the cam with new lifters, yes.
