I read about a conversion to turn an A-833 into an A-833OD.

Isn't this likely to turn out as expensive as buying the OD in the first place - assuming you could find one?

Depends. If the conversion constituted a rebuild, then you'd have a nearly new tranny, as opposed to taking your chances with whatever you find in the JY, which might need a rebuild anyway. Just my 2¢.

I would think it would be a lot more expensive to just buy an A-833 to convert. I have always been under the impression that the non-OD trannies are more expensive. What are you looking to put the tranny in Truck, a-body? I have an extra truck OD tranny.

A-body. '65 Valiant - my only transportation. What's the scoop on the truck OD? I'm definitely not up on Mopar truck trannies. Top shift? I'm game for anything that works and doesn't cost a fortune.

Thanks

truck trans has two shift locations on a long tail shaft, locations are same as b/e body 833's. So to make it work on an a-body, you would need to fab a relocator for the shifter, steps are spelled out on big block dart website. You would also need to shorten your drive shaft. Check out the 4 speed article on this website it will give you a little more information on the differences in drive shaft length, shifter locations, gears etc.

So it's essentially like a trans for one of the bigger cars? As long as it isn't a top shifter (like a big truck) I'm interested. I've studied the articles you mentioned and more and have a pretty fair idea what is involved. I have a good drive shaft man. The head scratching is the worst part for me - making sure I'm straight on retainer sizes, etc., BEFORE I make irreversible decisions :? But I'd want to know for sure what the ratios are. I have no need for 7.99 granny gears. :!: From there it's a matter of fitting my wallet.

Thanks

Assuming that is tranny only, may I assume it takes the 5.125 bell housing?
