I found a '71 charger for sale with a slant six. I was wondering if anyone knows how many '71 chargers came equipped with the slant six. It is the first I have ever seen. Any info would be appreciated.

We had one about 15 years ago with the slant. We called it "THE BEAST" because it was a dog getting off the line but one going at highway speeds, it was great. I figured it had 2.76 gears in it. Sadly, had to part it out as those Pennsy winters took its toll on the body.

IIRC, by 71 the Slant was an extra cost option on a B body. :shock:

Rare because nobody wanted them especially in the seventies B bodies when the cars became even heavier and too bloated for such a small displaced engine. Dont pay extra for its rarity cause you'll not likely find as many people appreciate its slant if you ever sell it. If you really want it play it down to the guy that you would've rather have a v8 than a six and youll get a better deal in the end (he's probably got that reaction a thousand times)

Cool. That sounds like something I'd drag home, even though the "collectors" would turn up their noses at it. (Actually because the collectors would turn up their noses at it :twisted: ) T-flite or three-on-the-tree? Nice car, basket case, or something in-between?

If it's something you would modify (not a like-new low milage original), an OD four-speed behind the slant would be cool- The long shaft truck version is relitively easy to find and fits B-bodies. Add a pistol-grip shifter, domed hood and 15x7 rallyes, and you've got muscle-car looks with near 25 MPG milage. Plus plenty of shocked expressions when you pop the hood at cruise-ins, those are priceless.

I have never seen the car. A guy stopped by when he saw my other cars, and asked me if I wanted to buy a 71 charger. When he said it had a slant six I knew I wanted it because I want a driver that gets good gas mileage. It is a southern car and it is rust free. He did not tell me what trans it had, but I will find out. It is a one owner car. He bought it from an elderly couple that bought it new. When I get the car I am going to eventually restore it to original and drive it.

Be careful with that idea. The best car I ever drove as far as gas mileage goes pound for pound was a 68' cadillac coupe de ville with a 472 block ( almost as good as what Im getting with my slant). way better than other v8s I drove especially the 305 which was in a 77 monte carlo. Big, big car like the charger but still lighter and it got terrible, the the worst mileage of all time. Had it had a 350 the mileage would have been better. What Im saying is the bigger the car you need a larger engine to pull the weight otherwise youll actually see poorer mileage than say a 318 v8 in the long run and still lack any appreciative driveability or performance.

Ditto what slantn'rant said. The slant six is a good motor for a light vehicle, or a heavier vehicle geared properly and driven appropriately. But putting a too small engine in a bigger car won't get you good gas mileage.

For example, I have two vans: an 84 Ford E-150 full size and an 86 Dodge B-150 shorty. THe Ford has a 351 high output windsor motor (Edelbrock intake, carb, and performer cam). It currently gets about 15-18 MPG mixed driving. THats doing 80 on the freeway with the A/C on. THe Dodge has a 225 in it. The best MPG I have squeezed out of the Dodge is about 10 MPG. That was with the lean burn computer still hooked up. That is with the A/C off going 45 MPH tops.

THe Charger could probably get decent mileage with the right gearing, a recuurved distributor, careful carb tuning, and a light foot. Just don't expect a speedy ride.

I have no problem getting 20-22mpg (if kept at 60mph) with my '72 Satellite w/225,904 and 2.94 to 1 8.75 rear. I recurved the distributer, #58 jet in carburetor, clutch fan (you'll have plenty of room for one), 2" exhaust with Magnaflow muffler. I also run 215/70-15 tires at 40psi. Of course, I usually drive faster than 60 so milage drops to around 18mpg at 70. A '71 Charger should be simular in weight, so good milage is possible. Get it and have fun with it! I take my heap to a local cruise on Saturdays and have a blast (parked next to a friends '69 'Cuda with a factory 440). PM if you want more info on B body slants.

All the responses have been great, thanks for all the information. I totally understand your explanation. An engine under a load will use more gas. I have seen that first hand with several trucks I have owned. I am really not worried about the mileage anyway, that is just what the guy told me about the car when he was driving it. He said he got about 21-23. It will be interesting to see what it does. When I find out more information I will post it here first.
