 Post subject: Rocker Slippage
PostPosted: Tue Oct 09, 2001 12:29 pm
Hello,

I have a '63 slant 6 with a #5 rocker arm that slipped on its axis such that the arm disengaged from the valve and pushrod. I have never adjusted the valves. Is this disaster a result of loose valve adjustments? Any suggestions would be helpful before attempting to reposition the rocker arm.

regards,

Dan

The old Dodge adjustable rockers do eventually wear out and wont stay in adjustment. I would try to adjust the valves at .010 intake/ .020 exhaust (for a stock cam) while the engine is hot and running. If the rocker goes out again you can get a rebuilt rocker shaft assembly from Kanter Assoc in New Jersey for about $40 or you can get the ARP long adjusters and double nut them and they will never slip. Hope this helps

Loose valve adjustment, a bent pushrod, a sticking valve guide or a poorly aligned rocker to valve stem tip could cause the racker to "jump-off".

"Roll" the pushrod to make sure it is not bent, check the rocker arm side clearance and adjust as needed. (rocker shaft retainer washers)

Once everything is back together, re-torque the head and adjust the lash.
