1960 - 70 use shims to adjust the 'backlash', after 1970 there are 2 adjuster screws that you need a special tool to turn. (a C- body torsion bar works)

Is this a new set of gears or are you readjusting a used set of gears?

This is a new set of gears placed in the rear recently. The rear is a 7.25 SG (cone type)from a '73 or 74 Dart sport. Trying to get the roar out of it....

It sounds like you need to reset the pinion depth and then reset the backlash.
What is the gear contact pattern telling you to do?
