I've got a 70 chally S6 car. Auto console. CONVINCE me that I shouldn't big block the car. I have a 440/727/8.75 ready to go. If BB'ing it, I will keep the #s matching S6/904 and 7.25 open FWIW....

I doubt that I can, and don't think I really want to try to CONVINCE you of anything. (Did that sound like Dan, or what? )
I will point out that I've seen a lot of V8 Challengers, and a fair number of big block Challengers. I've never seen a slanted Challenger, and would spend a lot more time looking at one at a local cruise or car show. For whatever that's worth.
What do you want the car to do for you? Go fast? Go fast on a budget? Look good in your garage? Get attention? Be different? Get you to work and back in style? Showcase your originality/creativity/disdain for convention? Challenge you?
A slanted Challenger could be reasonably quick. With less weight up front, it could be made to handle better than heavier-engined versions. It could be an MPG monster.

There I go - Thinking outside the wrong box again.

It's yours. Do what you want.

Hell, just do a Hemi head conversion on the 440, then put a blower on it, sticking up thru the hood. Then you can park in the "elete" section at shows/cruises.

The big block drivetrain sounds like the easy way to go fast, so if that's your goal, hey, go for it — that's what everybody else does.

Slanters like to be different, and (most) like to drive their cars and trucks every day. If you want 10 second 1/4 mile timeslips on the weekends and drive a Civic or a Ram all week, by all means, do the swap.

But if you want to drive it frequently (with some semblance of economy), or when you get tired of your Chally looking like damn near every other example out there, come on back. If you need CONVINCING, you're not going to understand what this forum is all about.

Good luck at the track and shows!

VM

Check the production #'s on /6 E-bodies before you do anything.

I say keep the slant six in the car and build it up. Install a hyperpak, and your car will draw more attention from people at a show or race than any e-body car with a v8. Keep the big block for another project.

I've only seen 2 slant e-bodies. 1 rusted into a pile of dust long ago it was 1 of 195. The other is in bohmer2's possesion. Since he has one and drives it you should ask him if he would put a BB into it.

(1) Big blocks are boring. Everybody with an E-body does it

(2) Gas is too expensive to feed a big block as a daily driver anymore

(3) Slants are different

(4) Slants are cheaper to fix and work on

(5) Big blocks are boring

(6) There is no place where you can actually use a big block anymore (unless you live in Montana or some other flat, empty locale)

(7) For the amount of money you can get selling the bi block and transmission you can build a killer slant six

(8 ) The car already has a slant six. It would be FAR less less time, money, and effort to just leave it a slant six

(9) To properly convert a six cylinder car to an eight cylinder car you need to replace far more than just the drivetrain

(10) Only insecure people need a big block in a daily driver

(11) Did I mention big blocks are boring and everyone with a E-body has one?

(12) Slant six challengers are VERY rare. Yours will probably be worth more as an original slant six car than as a hacked together big block

(13) You will get far more respect turning a fast 1/4 mile with a six cylinder than with a big block

(14) Big blocks are boring

 production for a 70 basic challenger is ~9900 units with a S6.
I"m an auto shop teacher, and the car will be reconstructed correctly, whichever way we go. not hacked, as most swaps are. If leaving a S6, it will get the 8.75 rear, frame connectors and disk brakes. If BB'ed, it gets the V8 K, sway bar, torque boxes too.

S6 has its virtues...true enough. The engine needs work, probably a full rebuild. That's another consideration.

The slant leaves a bit more room in the engine bay, which might help students see what's going on.

An auto shop teacher eh? How about this-

Rebuild the slant. Sell the big block motor and tranny.

Go whole hog- electric fan, lightweight mini-starter, somender grooves ( somender-singh.com/component/option,com_frontpage/Itemid,1/ ), A500 four speed automatic mounted via the A100 adapter plate, dutra dual exhaust, lightweight rims, etc...225 engine with a welded and re-ground crank to bump it up to a 260 cube motor (a la Doctor Dodges article), Dual exhaust, Get a hyper-pak manifold. Fuel inject it, intercool it, turbocharge it, install the swaybar, subframe connectors etc.... Fuel injection can come from multiple sources, as can turbocharging.

Use it as a platform to teach your students about modern engine technlogies as well as ways to increase performance and efficiency in all engines.

Why build a dinosaur when you can adapt the latest cutting edge stuff for the same or less money?

Buy an A or F body for the BB, or sell it to buy some cool gofast parts for the slant, but rebuild the Chally with the six.

Teach your kids to have an imagination and break away from the norm. Teach them to value old cars for thier personality as much as the value at the swaps/BJ. Too many forces conspire against a youth to follow the mob, to fall in line with everybody else; Wear your hat backwards because everyone else is doing it, Pierce and tattoo yourself because it'll make you an individual like everyone else, put a wing and a cold air intake on a ten year old civic because it's all anyone else can do, or has done.

Plus - The students who build it will be emotionally invested in the car no matter what, but the slanty Challenger will be less of a draw for folks with less than honourable intentions.

I surrender the soap box.
