My father has been using my truck for about a month. He called me last week and said he had hit a pot hole hard and the cluster lights went out. The running lights had also gone out. All other lighting works fine with the possible exception of the emergency flashers. They flash quicker than they should. I looked up the fuse location and type which he has replaced several times. I tried putting in a new fuse but sparks flew. One minor modification I had made long ago was to correct the power connection to the radio the previous owner had done a hack job on. I noticed this wire and the wire it tied into going to the accessory circuit was hanging loose. I wrapped it in electrical tape not knowing where it plugged in. I have the FSM and will look it over, but figured maybe someone could give me a point in the right direction.

What year truck? If it's an 80's model, in regards to the dash lights going out, check the connectors on the instrument cluster. Hitting the pothole may have simply knocked one or both of them far enough off the pins to disconnect the power.

4-way flashers, check the flasher itself (swap it with the turn signal flasher).

It's an '83. The guages all work as well as the in dash signal lights. But the cluster illumination lights do not. The reverse, signal and headlights, horn and interior cab light work. The side marker, front and rear running lights do not. So far, without being able to look at the truck, I believe the wrong fuse was replaced. I might get away with replacing the #2 and #8 fuses. It might otherwise be the switch itself.
Does anyone have a better way of tracing circuits than photocopying and highlighting each one?
