I just finished the outside and interior of my 75 duster and bought it with the indesructble slant six thanks to the advice of my dad a huge inline six fan. I had thoughts of dropping in a V8(340) like my uncle, as his challenger with the same engine runs 11's with the rev limitor set at 4500 for a while. I know decent stuff about engines, but never built anything and want to build something just in case the slant starts to go south (almost 200K mils). So I meant Dutra in vegas for Mopars at the strips, and was amazed at the power of a 170. So for my first car and performance engine will be a SLANT SIX.
Ok, so here's my questions... I've decied to go with dutra's long rod engine type. However, can you use a 440 rod as it's ournal size is the same, it's crank is only .1" longer, and just have the pin re-bushed? What's the advantage of a hyperpak over a Super six(500cfm)? Is EFI cheap enough to do on a $1500 budget for the entire engine, because the article was close to that alone. Is turbo worth it, or can that be done on NA just as easily with work (port and polish)vs. the amout of money. Last I' lost on a cam choice.
Well, any suggestions or advice on building this engine will be helpful. I pickup the donor 225 this weekend and hope to build it over a year. Thanks

You're not too far away from me...
If you want a ride in a hyperpak duster I can grant that wish. The hard part is finding the 198 rods...$1500 is a good start, but there are a few peices of the puzzle that will tank some of your budget.

???
440 rod is only about .060" longer than the 225.
440 journal is 2.375", much larger.

First and formost, I want an engine that can last about 4-5 years with just regular maintaince so when I get out of college I have a cool commuter, it was either this car or a new saturn ion, I stand by my choice. I would like some mild performace maybe something in the 250hp range more as a byproduct of a nice engine not so much the goal. I think new rods and pistons, a new camshaft, and full port and polish, with last a nice intake and exhaust.
I need help with what kind of duration and lift for a cam that would be streetable and draggin on the weekends. I've read that a 280 duration is good but I need more info. Next would be the intake and ehuast choices that wouldn't break my budget, but I would love the hyperpak over my super six.
Last, my research on the long rod engine has lead me to this. The price and rarity of 198 rods is a real pain in the back side, but will mate to 2.2L piston's something I really want over the slugs. However the 440 crank stroke os 3.75" with a .99" pin size and same journal I believe do to the bearing's are interchangable. The 198 has a 3.64" stroke with a .827" pin size. Are my numbers wrong or is there something I've overlooked, I'll be happy to be told that. But if I'm right this could be a much cheaper and easier altertinative to the 198 rods. Also thanks for the offer in the hyper pak ride, maybe I'll have to take you up on that, expcet I was in a serious accident beginning of the month, not driving yet and a little shy to get in a moving car, but thanks for the offer. The only thing that got me into cars was sitting and firing up a 427 cobra when I was 8.

How quickly do you need the 198 rods, I have a 198 motor sitting about 5 hours away from me that I just haven't had time to tear into. I doubt I will be using the rods from it, but it would likely take me a month or so before I have time to go get the motor let alone tear it down and check out the condition of the rods.

That would help tremondously as I'm more on budget than time constrainted. I figure with all the normal stuff I have to catch up to it'll easily be a month before I'll have my 225 torn apart. My e-mail is runvs_826@yahoo.com if you want to arrange price and stuff.
I think the 440 idea is pretty dead in the water...however now I'm curious about the dutra dual setup and how do you acquire the front piece??? Do you need to talk to doug directly? thanks

What size is the rod journal on /6?...
2.187 x 1.015 wide.
The wide journal is the bigger issue, most V8 rods are not that wide.

Good to know how wide they are, I was trying to find this and could not.

But as for the chebby rod I was mistaken, they are 2.200 size. Which makes them in line for working if they are wide enough.

Is it me or does this rod fall right in to what we need,

Quote from 440 source about there long rod for the 440.

We now also offer our Platinum rods in a "Chrysler width" 2.200" (big block Chevy) line. These rods are specially made for Chrysler width (2.375") crank journals that have been turned down to a big block Chevy journal size (2.200".) In the past, engine builders had to use standard big block Chevy rods in this situation, which would give .070"+ side clearance, overloading the oil rings and spraying an excessive amount of oil around the crankcase, resulting in horsepower loss due to windage. Our Chrysler width rods now solve this problem. The big end width is identical to all our other rods, at 1.014", while still keeping the standard 2.200" big block Chevy journal diameter, which will result in the proper side clearance of about .022". Manley used to market a similar rod as part number 14279, however they have discontinued that part number. These also work great for applications where stock 3.75" stroke cranks have been offset ground to 3.9" with 2.200" Chevy journals. In addition, these make it possible for those who already own a 4.15" Chrysler journal sized stroker crank to offset grind it up to 4.250" - 4.300" stroke with 2.200" Chevy journals. This enables you to keep the crank you already own, increase your cubic inches, get the smaller journal size, and not have to worry about any side clearance issues

Standard Big Block Chevy (for stroker combinations):

7100.990.2200.HBBC 7.100" H Beam 2.200" .990" .990" ARP2000
220,000 PSI 810-820 RB Platinum
BBC
$369.95

If I am figuring right a .013 under rod bearing for a 440 that had chebby size jurnals would make this work on a standard /6 crank. Or basically a .013 under bearing for a big block chebby.

Doctor Dodge look over all this and see if I am right.

*ahem*

I'm sure you meant to type "Doctor Dodge, could you please look over all this and see if I am right?"...right?
