They also have the standard 440 lenth rod in a chebby size, which could allow those that wanted to use off the shelf pistons for /6 but gain .060 in compresson hieght. If the pin size falls within the two sizes they have listed. Something worth looking into to see if its right.

These rods are very good rods for the price with the 220.000 ARP bolts @ less than $400.00 in H or I configs.

Oh the link to place that has them is 440source.com.

The Chevy size is big block with 2.20" journal and .990" wide bearing, won't work.

What do you mean.990" wide bearing, wont work.

That is the piston pins size is talking about. The width of the rod is 1.014" compared to the slant six 1.015". .001 diff not going to cause nothing.

2.200 journals size. Yea the slant six is 2.187 if I am correct. So you would have to order a .013 undersize for the chebby and then all would be good.

I think that 1.01" wide rod is a bbc rod for use in a BB mopar. Anyway it's still to narrow. Forged crank Slant six rods are about 1.205", the bearing is about 1.01". That chebby rod is very heavy, made for big blocks with huge pistons.
Look at this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford-Fla ... dZViewItem

They're light yet strong and use buick bearings. You could do a journal inside a journal like I did with this 170 crank that uses honda 1.888" journals. Image

Frank,

I'm going to be building a 170 soon. Can you tell me more about your rods and pistons?

Thanks!

Sorry, thought you meant the common Eagle, SCAT etc. rods.
Be sure to get the full-width (RB) rod, but "order a .013 undersize for the chebby"?
You mean clean the journal up at 2.1800 and use a .020" rod bearing?

Yes you could also do that, .020 & .007 off the crank if you didnt want to order special .013-.014 bearing. For me that would depend on the crank & if it needed turned any. I like to keep them standard if I can because I intent to put some big power on it. And you would probably have to get someone like Ross to make you a set of piston, but you would end up with a light set of pistons for sure.

The Buick bearing is probably for the 215/300/340/350 engine, and is 2.000 journal by .835" wide. Your oil pressure looks safe because the rod sides are captured by the journal step (.093" all around), and you still have fairly good crank stiffness at 1.888" (48mm) journals because of your overlap with the short stroke.
Stock 170 journal overlap .906"
Stock 198 journal overlap .656"
Stock 225 journal overlap .406"
170 journal overlap with 1.888" throw .757", still more than a stock 198.

Math: Journal Overlap = ½ (Main Journal Diameter + Rod Journal Diameter – Stroke Length)

Every thing I have read says the slant six rod is 1.015. I guess I will see for sure when I take my engine apart, which I plane on anyway before buying anything.

Your rod setup looks very light and would make anyone with a N/A motor a good setup. But I would be afraid off a crank cut like that for myself because I will be running a T67 BB turbo hard & pumping 600hp or more.

The rods I show are around 780 to 810 on the weight, although heavier than the ones you are using they are lighter than the factory rod. And with a very light piston would still end up with a light assy.

This something I dont know off, what is this journal overlap explained in laymans terms. Right off hand it looks like how much area you have to carry all the forces involved.

The calculation is very crude, shows how much metal connects the throws to the cheeks with various dimensions. Skewed in favor of small cranks, the actual intersection is between 2 chordal sections and is considerably larger with big journals.

I also found these rods that are stock lenth & you get 8 rods for the price.

Got to bottom of page, very last listing. It doesnt give a brand on them tho. He has Cat & Eagle in the other rods he list but this set shows no name. Probably Cat.
