I'm putting together an '83 225 out of a Dodge pickup for my '63 Valiant. The engine was originally equipped with a hydraulic cam and lifters which I have replaced with a Comp Cams 64-246-4, grind CR6 252H10 and their hyd lifters and new springs. The instructions with the cam explains how to determine the amount of pre-load on the lifters and how to compensate if it isn't correct. The rockers are non-adjustable, the pre-load turned out to be ~.100" using the method described in the pamphlet. This seems to imply that I have to shim the rocker shaft ~.070" to get the desired pre-load of .030" recommended by Comp. I called Comp and was advised to try what I have alluded to above, but since this is the first time I have tried this, I wanted to get other opinions. This is my first re-build on an engine with non-adjustable rockers. The rockers are new, but the push rods are the original ones furnished with the stock cam from the factory. I would call Smith Brothers and get a shorter set of pushrods made.

I had "very" bad luck with rocker shaft shims. I used a clifford hydraulic cam and milled the head .100". I had to use 3 .030" shims under the rocker shaft. Stupid me snugged the shaft down too tight and cracked a few of the rocker shaft perches The shims didn't fit together very well, and figured they would "squash" a little. The top edges of the shims ended up narrower then the rocker shaft and "spread" the perches apart. I didn't over do it by any means (I managed to do that with a normal box end wrench).... Anyways where I am going with this is if you end up using multiple shims make sure you trim them to fit proper!!!

Good call. I called Smith Brothers and they are making a new set of push rods for me that will accomodate the proper valve train geometry. Thanx for the help. And I was comforted to find I had measured the pre-load properly. Those guys were a great help. Hopefully I will have the 'ol Valiant back in the stop light derby. Regards. RMDV.

why not just use the rockers off of a mechanical cam motor? that way you can manually set the preload

most parts stores will have a list of pushrods....all machine shops worthy of the name will. stock length is 10.009" get a 5/16 ball/ball push rod that is 9.900" and be done with it....i spent $1.50 each on mine. what is smith bros gonna charge you?

or buy a new set, use a tubing cutter and make your own.

Because then he won't have oil to the lifters. There is no lifter oil galley on a slant so the hyd lifters get their oil through the valve gear and down the pushrods.
