I'm laying out a blue print for my engine build and I could use some advise on which direction to take as in choosing the right combination of parts.

Here's what I have:
Vehicle:
85' Dodge D100

Powertrain:
225ci
A833OD
8 3/4 rear 3:55 ratio

Here's what I'm looking to build:
Street/Strip
300 miles a week
Keep mpg over 10
2000.00 budget

Parts so far:
(1) 70' 225 or 198 w/ hemi style head
(1) 80' 225 w/ A833OD non lean burn

If the 70' motor is a 198, I would like to build a long rod engine.

There are no hemi heads for the slant-6.

A 198 will be underpowered (with resultant poor fuel mileage) trying to drag around that truck with those gears; build a 225. The '70 engine is, oddswise, probably a 225. Recommend building that up; the '70 engine is stouter than the '80.

Recommendations would be easier to make if you'd elaborate on what you plan on doing with this '85 econo-truck on the strip...

Let me re-phrase, the 198 has the tube type heads. Building a 198 never crossed my mine, but I could use the rods from it for a "Long Rod" engine. If it is a 225 I will go with that.

It will be a daily driver looking at around 300 miles/wk. Dan, more then likely I'll never make it to the speedway no more then once a year. My plan is to build an engine that's got plenty of UMPH! In translation good low end to mid range torque. I hope this helps.

Article you referenced is generally not at all compatible with your street/mileage/low-end torque goals.

Try a 2bbl "Super Six" setup, Dutra Duals, and also work closely with Doug Dutra (Doctor Dodge on here) to get your compression ratio, ignition curve and cam specs/selection dialled in.

If you plan carefully and do a lot of the work yourself, yes, you can probably stay within budget. If you must buy labor...it's going to be tight. A plain ordinary engine rebuild using quality components and competent machine/assemblywork is more expensive nowtimes than a lot of people realise!

Majority of the work will be performed by me with the exception on the machine work to the head and block.

One member to look for is "Super6" I think he's running an 80's Dodge truck with a hotter setup...he might clue you in on the trials and tribulations of the build up.

The problem with hotter motors and mileage is you're having too much fun with the power that the mpg goes down in a hurry...

Good luck, I think you can make your budget if you shop and plan frugally (I usually try to get quality components a couple years ahead of time, so I have them available instead of having to "wait" or find out the good brand just sold their tooling to "third world manufacturing LLC"...

I'm shooting to have this finished by the first of next summer. We have a couple of big swap meets between now and then, so I'm hoping to pick up some parts. In a nut shell I will be taking my time.
