Wondering if anyone knew if a late (1968 and later) 1920 Holley cable controlled carb will work on my 1965 rod linkage car. It looks like the
small metal part where the rod linkage attaches to my older, existing Holley has a set screw, and I was wondering if it comes off and can be attached to the newer carb so the rod linkage works with it ?

Dunno. You might be able to swap the throttle shafts.

The original '60-'66 carbs in rod-operated applications had the "box" where the throttle rod attaches permanently attached to the throttle lever. The rod throttle adaptor you may have found on your present carb was meant for use with replacement '62-'67 carburetors, which have a flat throttle lever with two holes in the same plane. The '68-up carbs have a "stepped" throttle lever; only the upper hole will match up with the rod throttle adaptor, and it'll place the adaptor about 3/8" too far rearward. Whether this prevents proper attachment and operation of the rod or not is variable car-by-car. If you try this, you will need to make a spacer and use an extra-long screw to reach the 'stepped forward' lower hole in the later carburetor's throttle lever (just attaching it by the upper hole would not be sufficiently rigid or secure).

Swapping the throttle shaft from one used/worn carb to another used/worn carb practically guarantees driveability problems, but it can be done if there's no other option and if you're prepared to take the carb off multiple times to readjust the position of the throttle plate.

I do have one more brand new rod-type carburetor, see Here.
