I have a 60 valiant with a 170 that I am planning on "super-sixerizing"...would it be worth my while to just go ahead and put a 225 in it? Would the engine mounts and stuff match up?

The 170 in question has somewhere north of 170k miles on it and the valve cover has never even been removed.

If you can get a good 225 cubic inch go for it. Lots more power plus more available parts.

I replaced a 170 cubic inch with a 225 cubic inch in my '61 Valaint Hardtop.

the mounts should work. the trans/torque converter will work provided the 225 has a small hub (pre-'67) crank in it. the exhaust may need some work since the 225 is about an inch taller. same goes for the radiator hoses and throttle/kickdown linkage. i think there's something else i missing here. any more to it guys?

The 225 will bolt right in, with certain conditions.
The 225 engine must be a 1967 or older, or you must use a crank reducer bushing, if using the 62 automatic trans.
Use the engine brackets (what the mounts bolt to), the oil pan and oil pump pickup tube, from the 62 engine.
Might have to rework the exhaust pipe slightly. The 225 engine is 1 inch taller then the 170.

1960 is a special case. It is a little more difficult to install a 225 into a 1960 Valiant than it is into a 1961 or later. Depending on production date and plant of your '60, you may encounter minor to moderate fit issues, all of which can be solved without too much difficulty. It will work, it just may take a little extra work. The oil pan and pickup will require special attention, because the 170 pan and pickup are not the same as the 225 items. The correct pieces for your swap are '61-'66 A-body 225. Talk to Menko (Newlancerman on here) for details. Be advised, having a 225 in a '60-'62 A-body makes valve adjustments much more difficult (heater box gets in the way of removing valve cover and adjusting last two valves).

If your 170 is in good condition, swap on the Super Six and go from there!

The fan belt will also change size... :P

As for the exhaust system, it gets pulled-up higher and will sometimes hit on the floor, I have sandwiched-in an extra exhaust pipe flange as a spacer for systems that could not be repositioned by 'pry bar' bending.

Overall a great swap, especially if you can find a deal on a good running 225. Look for the "we pulled the low miles SL6 out to put in a V8" situation.

I agree with Dan on this one,Start with a supersix and possibly an electronic ignition of your choice,a bigger exaust and watch the 170 get real peppy.I performed these mods on a tired 170 in my 63 Dart and it became spirited little car that still gets 22-23 mpg on the hiway.
If you do decide to 225 your Valiant I have a couple of real good 225 engines lying around and would be interested in trading for your 170,Im looking for on to rebuild for my Dart.
BTW,I have a 60 Valiant with a HyperPak equipped 170 that acts like it is gonna be a real screamer with alittle more tuning.(it isnt finished yet but there have been a few impromtu backroad blasts   ).

I'm still not sure yet, but...

Could you tell me a little more about the 225s? What year and what car are they out of? Miles? Do either of them have transmissions with them? My 170 has a 3 spd, but if you have a 4 spd you're willing to part with...

Please email @ justinbohmer@hotmail.com

Thanks,

Justin
