quick question : what size carb would be considered ideal for a 225/super-six/headers/and a mild low end torque cam. I had my uncle rebuild a Carter BBD that I took off a Dodge Aspen, but I wanted to see what other options might be out there.

A carter BBD is pretty good.

A 350 CFM Holley 2300 should also fit the ticket rather nicely. You'll have to use an adapter plate though, and if you're gonna do that, I'd think about taking a Dremel tool and porting the manifold to match the opening. Doing that kinda destroys any chance of going back to the BBD though.

no, doesn't destroy nothing, at worse case scenario what you'd have to do if you're going back to carter 2 barrel is using a spacer... not so thick, say about 3 or 4 thick gaskets. (about 5/16 to 1/2)

Ok, "destroy" was probably a little strong, but it does greatly reduce the sealing area that you will have if you do decide to use a BBD at a later time. Probably shouldn't be an issue, but I would warn people to look at how much material will be left before blindly cutting it out.

ok, this is a picture of a carter BBD intake that's been milled to take a 500 cfm holley and I still have 5/16 on the driver's side and a tad over 3/8 on the passg side (talking about the greatest reduced sealing area parts) I think that's enough meat to seal even a 1.2" throttle bore opening small BBD. My Holley 500 has a 1.5625" bore on each barrel... there are smaller holley tho, with 1.5" and 1.440" barrels diameter.

Yeah, I don't see any reason that it would cause problems, but that 5/16 would still make me a tad nervous. Of course, then again, I've also been accused of being massively over cautious. Next time I have my intake off, I'm going to do grind it all down until it's matched up anyway.

I used to have a non-matched intake manifold and when I swapped this one i felt the diffrence. But then again, I removed the heat riser so that would might be producing other improvements/detriments anyway so...

OK, there's big difference in mid-hig rpm ranges. Low end was kinda better before (I'm almost sure that it's the smaller plenum volume and increased turbulence what gave better low end seat of the pants feel)

Thanks guys~ I am still trying to get my Carter to work properly (the engine runs fine at idle, but when i drive it down the road it starts backfiring pretty bad). It still needs adjustment i think or perhaps some distributor adjustment since i put petronix in it. Anyways thanks again for the info!

Sounds like a vacuum leak, most likely worn throttle bushings.

may be a malfunctioning enrichment needles mechanism? I mean, when it's under load the needles would rise up and down with the vacuum down and up respectively, ain't that right?
