Yep. In another post I (optimistically) asked about a stalling problem, thinking it may be the stupid dashpot. Well, I figured it out when I removed the fuel filter...looked like good ol’ Georgia red clay pouring out.

Pulled the tank and it’s pretty crusty in there. Odd, the car must've sat in a nice dry, heated garage for a long time (with a half a tank of shellac in it) because the outside of the tank is really quite clean.

So I start calling around to get it boiled out and I'm informed that the EPA has prohibited this procedure. Good for bunnies and squirrels, bummer for my Dart (and my wallet). I can have the tank re-lined for $150 -$200, or buy a new one for $160, see below:

Anybody have an opinion/advice?

Thanks.

Odd.. a friend of mine had his tank boiled out by a reputable shop less than a year ago. It's possible that your shop may have just not been interested in doing it; you might call around a bit first.

Shop's BSing you; boilout procedures have NOT been "banned by the EPA". They just didn't want to do it for you for whatever reason.

Your '71 can use a tank for a '70 California or '71 50-state-and-Canada A-body. Any other year will require modifications to the tank venting system to work properly and safely in your '71 car. The '71-type tanks are available new.

Check the POR15 and Eastwood websites.

I believe they have a tank clean / reline kits.... (includes some acid)

After you drop the tank, use some gravel/old nuts bolts/etc. to break up the rust before using the acid cleaner by tumbling the tank.........

Or they wanted to sell me their re-lining services. If so, why do folks have to lie? Might as well ask the sky to not be blue.

Be careful how you proceed here if you attempt to "line" the tank (or have it "lined"). The 1970 California + 1971 50-state/Canada tanks have a fully-enclosed internal chamber at the top, connected to the main area of the tank by a very small passage. If this passage gets blocked off, as would be likely to happen by a "lining" procedure, the tank's ventillation will be screwed up and you will very likely create external fuel leaks and driveability problems.
