this might sound stupid: do i need to run an oil feed line to a buick GN turbo or will the intercooler im getting with it be enough?? does the Buick turbo use oil or is it like a sealed bearing?? i dont know much about turbos. help me out

No sir, YOU NEED OIL. I can tell you pretty quick that you need to spend so time doing reseach. Nothing wrong with that but running a turbo needs to be understood or you will end up with a blown engine real quick. Done right it can give great power & last as long as anything else.


TurboMustang.com is one of the best sites I know of with turbo info. Spend about two months reading and you will be alot better off in trying to attemp something like this.

A little quick rundown of what you may need.

Oil lines to & from the turbo ( tap oil system & tap oil pan with fittings)
Water lines to & from turbo (some turbos)
A fuel system that can flow the fuel & respond to Boost pressure.
( pump,lines,Boost reference regulator that can handle the Power level)
A moddified carb or EFI.
A way to mount the turbo to the exhaust or a Fabricated header/manifold.
Piping to connect the turbo to carb/EFI
Ignition system that can fire the extra fuel & retard the timing when boost come on.
A wideband O2 system so you can know what the fuel mixture is, or dyno tuning to get it set right so you dont melt pistons or blow headgaskets.


Just some of the main things you would need, but after spending some time reading you will see what I mean. It is a bit of trouble but it is well worth the power and the streetablility that comes with a turbo system. Much better than building a all out motor for power & will give more power & be still like a stock car when driving until you give the throttle & reach boost.

Yes, do allot of research. If you do not find that the GN turbo is way too big, do some more! I have owned and modified a GN for almost twenty years and even with all the electronic controls, a laptop scan tool program that records and shows everything in real time and plenty of thought I managed to tear up the bottom end ounce and got to do a complete rebuild early. I too have noticed that our slant and GN have almost the same displacement, I stopped myself right there. Go ahead and grab that intercooler, but I would get a smaller turbo designed for a max of about 7psi at 4800 rpm with your engine size. Then start off with 4-5 psi and get it all dialed in. It is not realistic to try to run high boost with pump gas and a carb. Sure you hear about running everything from 15-25 psi on the street, but not without a full blown engine management system and high octane or electronic alcohol injection. Done right and maintained a turbo will give more power on the street than just about any other mod. Done wrong it can ruin your engine in a matter of seconds.

thanx guys. it was pretty much the oiling aspect of the whole thing i didnt understand but ive been doing my research and its all pretty clear to me thanx for the advise. ill keep you update (with more questions) with the conversion

I wouldnt be afraid to run the GN turbo because of size. You dont have to turn it up. IMHO I think it will be fine. But the Slant Six is known for not having good cylinder distrabution on fuel with a carb setup and it would be something to watch out for. Temp of each cylinder with close plug readings along with wideband can help keep a eye on this.

EFI would be a better choice but with the correct aproach & a close eye on things it can be done with a carb. Heck I was considering running two GN turbos but am going with one big turbo instead that adds up to more than the two GN turbos. Of course a good engine with supporting mods is needed but anything is possible if done right. :)
