Finally got in that clusterfudge called Monster Mopar and unloaded yesterday morning around 10:30. Went right through tech, and got back to the pits in time for our 1st time shot.

Let go of the button and the car jumped sideways, and kinda waffled down track to a 12:06@108. It usually does that on the first run so I didn't touch anything.

We had 7 cars in attendance. Seymour with his white car, Rick Valent with his 4 door 4 speed '62, Mike Evans and his Aspen, Mike Jeffrey and his '68 Valiant, Fred Mueller's turbo truck, Joel Harris' '69 Valiant, and me.

Around 5 o'clock they finally called up for the first round. I dialed an 11:96 and went up against Joel Harris. Joel handed me a gift so I legged mine on out. It again did the wavering thing downtrack, but when I got back in it at the turnoff I knew I was done. A plug and compression check confirmed that #3 had "0" compression, but no metal spots on the plug or oil out the breather.

Mike Evans got by Fred Mueller, Rick and Seymour had a good race with Rick winning, and Mike pulled in for the bye only to find a girl in a black Duster in the other lane who was not even entered in the race. She put a gate job on Mike, but ran out on the other end a ton.

For the 2nd round, Mike Evans got Rick, and I had Mike J again. I was gonna drop out and give Mike the round, but just could lay down. I dialed the car 20.0 and footbraked it. At the stripe, I plyed it pretty good, getting Mike by a fender, but he wailed me on the tree and I broke out by .21.

Rick prevailed over Mike E for the other half of the final.

The final saw Rick way off his dial and Mike J safe for the win.

We had Mike J parked in the low 11:70's all weekend, I ran a low 12, Seymour went a new best of 14:52 on this motor, Joel and Fred were runnign mid-15's, Mike E low 16's, and Rick low 18's in a sick street car that even has A/C.

I am pretty sure mine ate a head gasket. On the way down I had a lengthy discussion with my lady Susan about selling off all my Slant stuff and buying a '68-'70 Roadrunner street car. No decision yet, but the longing for a Beeper just got a lot stronger.

I've gotta admit, that was my first time out at a drag strip, and even though I was just spectating I had a great time. It was a blast to finally see one of the races and meet up with a couple of you guys, and I'm hoping to have my truck in tune by next year so I'll be able to run w/o completely embarassing myself.

I didn't realize that Fred's truck was running a slant while I was back there in the pits, so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw him in the first round. Just wish I woulda gotten a closer look at it while I was back there in the pits.

Hopefully I'll have some free time tonight to crop down and post some of the pictures I shot.

Thanks for the rundown, Dennis. Glad to hear that Mike pulled it off - overdue for him.

Bummer about your motor and hope we won't see you out of the Slanting business anytime soon. Get that Duster goin', man! We'll have to hook you up with some of these Aussie head gaskets...

Bagel ole buddy why doint you smell the smoke me or you are not going to be the fasest at the track. Im trying to do one thing and you are trying to do a very fasest effort for a a 11 second street car. I would go for the Roadrunner if your friend is special. Wasted away in Redneckvill again searching for national championship . But there is Bud in the coler and it will soon renneder a vision for it. Your Racing Friend Possum :D

Actually, I am seriously considering finding either a '70 Runner or '69 Bee roller and putting a Slant in it.

Maybe my new name will be "Beepzilla". :shock:

Sandy, there is no chance that I will ever have anything but a rental at Vegas. It is just too time intensive for me to trailer a car out there. :cry:

I am gonna tear the car down next weekend. Look for a "Parts fopr Sale" ad then. :oops:

Tom, it all depends on what I find when I tear the motor down Saturday.

Truth is, I just don't enjoy racing like used to. I used to look forward to going, but this year I haven't even had the car out a dozen times. The damage and destruction really have nothing to do with it. I am just in severe burn-out. For the last few years I have really enjoyed having someone else drive the car more than running it myself. I am trying to talk Susan into driving, but she really is not interested much.

I talked to her on the way to ST. Louis about taking all the nitrous stuff out of the car and settling it down for her, but she just has no interest in it. :cry:

Since I bought my new Ninja, I am happier just out riding again like I used to be. :shock:

Sorry to hear about all the trouble Dennis, it was good to talk to you again even if it was brief . Hopefully things aren't as bad as it sounds they could be with the motor (but if they are let me know about that intake manifold0.

Also, I don't know if it sold or not but there were some guys from STL that had a 68 satellite 2door car in the swap meet area could be a good slant six RR clone (look for RM MOBARN INC on moparts in the MMW thread for photos).

Brian, it was good talking to you and CStryker too.

Right now I know this is just the frustration setting in of missing the 11 second zone again. IF the car had hooked on the first pass I would have made it. It's the stuff like that that is just killing me. :shock:

However, the reality is that since my divorce was final, I just plain don't have the desire to race anymore.

Watch the classifieds. If the damage is terminal, you will see a "For Sale" ad. I have enough pieces laying around that IF I can sell them for what I have in them (cost only) I can buy a decent RR or SB.

I can certainly understand that. Racing this year has become more of job than fun. The business is so busy that I have not had any time to help Dad with the Rampage and barely have time to maintian the Simca and race on Saturday night. Spent over a year training a produciton manager and just about the time he was getting it he quit! Actually I sent him to a training class and one of the students in the class with him offered him a job and he took it and quit the day he came back. :x

Take a month off and breathe deeply before you sell anything OK?

Hey ole buddy Bagel take a deep breath and put some time off out there.Doint give up on the Slant. If you think it would help i will give you a Camron Tilley head gasket ship it to you and if you still want to sell no cost to you. I was like you after the first three events i went to this year. Three events 13 points. I did better than that my first year Slant Racing. With the cost of racing and going to six or seven events that is 400 or more miles I thought what am i doing. But a Slant friend and racer kind of grabed me and shook me. This is still what i always wanted to do all my life and the Slant family is where i will retire from racing. After Colombus i took a break even local racing and tryed to fix the problem. Was it car or driver. well it was a little of both. We went to Wilksboro and won the greatest race i have ever raced. I feel like we could have won at Clay City if the shiftlite and tach had been working. Your Racing friend Possum :D

I wish I could let you share some of my enthusiasm for racing. I love drag racing and I would be at the track every weekend if the engine in ny Duster wasn't so tired and worn out.

Maybe you should let the duster rest for a year and become a technichal advisior for all of us "rookies" :mrgreen: The vets have their hands full trying to rein in all of us young'uns at the races. worse than Pre-k especially with me around (just kiddin0.

You ain't gonna let Possum have the last laugh are you? :lol:

If we can't beat em' then we'll wear em' out. :wink:
