I just picked up a '73 Duster /6 auto. Needs at least a battery before I can try to fire her over but overall she is in pretty good shape. Paint is of course a must but I have found no rust issues and it has only 52,000 miles on it. Best part of all, I didn't pay a single red penny for it!

Now where do I begin???...hehe

I have already found a local shop familiar with /6's who I plan to have rebuild it with flat tops, hardened seats/guides, bore .030, cam, 3 angle valve job, mill head...and I'm sure I'm forgetting a thing or two. Anyway, way excited here and ready to get moving on this project...only problem now is finding enough time...

Funny thing happened, I was out in the garage working and a neighbor from down the street came down and introduced himself (about a 70 y/o man). Then he asked if I planned to fix the Duster up...I of course said yes sir. Well he then asked if I like Volares...one thing led to another and now I have a /6 Volare sitting here beside the Duster. The Volare is in awesome shape, 47k miles, BBD 2 barrel with factory a/c...will have pics of it loaded up soon.

Hey Don,
Just saw your Duster pics. Nice score!!
Please do me a favor. The next time you get a chance, lay a straight-edge along the top of your spare tire and tell me if it is completely recessed below the trunk floor. If not, how much is sticking up. Then, let me know what the tire size is.

I have been trying to find a spare tire that will fit completely below the fiberboard spare cover and vinyl mat we put in my son's '74 Dart Sport. I want the floor to be totally flat, without the spare bulging it up. Preferably using a full-size tire, not a donut.

Sure thing boss, I will check it out tomorrow afternoon. So far I have pulled out the interior and have talked to a few painters about laying some color (black) on this thing. Now I'm going to have to either make some new door interior panels (in black) or hope to find some used ones...sigh

Don't give up too soon. If you have a little patience, you might find some nice ones for a decent price (even in black). Start asking around on sites like this one, and maybe someone is parting out an A-body.

Love that Voalre! That reminds me of the 76 Volare premiere sedan I rescued out of a junkyard. Great car, very fun. One of the best mods you can do is to add a rear sway bar.

I do believe my dad still has his original spare in the trunk of his 74 dart sport. want me to see if I can get the tire size for you?

My dad and I both have spare tires that have never been on the ground...his in his 74 sport and me in my 75 custom

Reed - Thanks for the compliment and info...I'll tell my buddy to find a rear swaybar for the Volare. He worked on it today and to bring the brakes back to life only cost him $12.00. He's now pulling parts to go HEI on it and has to replace the exhaust gas valve on the intake before he's ready to have it going.

Ross, yes, certainly, please find out what the spare is.
Anyone else for that matter, I'm still looking for a spare that will fit flush
below the lip of the spare tire well, so that the spare cover and trunk mat will lie flat without a bulge. Preferably a full size tire, not a donut, although I can probably find one of those that will work temporarily.

I might could even consider a 4-ply trailer tire or something along those lines. It's the width of these radials that is the problem.

Any ideas?

If it's that important to have a flat floor with a full-size spare, you might have to deepen the well, or build up a subfloor. Cubby holes with hinged doors in the subfloor could be used for tool storage, etc. Hmmmm ...
Teeninsy spares bug me. The places I go mean that I might have to drive a long ways on the spare, so I try to have about the same size as the rest of the rolling stock. That way I can drive at normal speeds.

Are you small bolt pattern or large?


If large, you can get a 15x4 rim and use a 155 80 15 or 165 80 15 tire as a spare.
