Hey MoPar dudes, this is my first post and it regards my first MoPar, bought yesterday. I now own a '69 Dart with a 225 and an automatic that does not currently run because it's missing it carb. It came with two Holley 1920s and one of them I would like to rebuild and use to get the car home and on down the road. My problem is that I don't know if either one is original to this application. I've looked at kits on the NAPA website and neither of my carb numbers appears in the model listings.

The car had a Holley 1920 model 12R-4013B when the previous owner bought it and on that carb was a sticker calling it a remanufactured unit from the factory. This number doesn't pop up anywhere I've looked and the guy said it ran like crap with it so I don't put much stock in this one.

The other carb, which looks more complete because it has more hoses and stuff on it, is a Holley 1920 12R-4285B. It doesn't show up in the NAPA database but I called Wildcat Auto Wrecking asking for a carb and the guy found one with this same number so I'm lead to believe that it is a valid part.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I'm hoping that A) I can use this carb on my car and that B) one of the NAPA kits will work for it even though it's not listed.

Pretty sure you're looking at casting numbers rather than carburetor type numbers. The type number is stamped on the carburetor's main body, on a surface facing skyward (on carbs through '70) or forward ('71-up) with the carburetor in its installed position. The number you're looking for will often have an R before it, and there'll be four digits, then you might have one or more "A"s or perhaps a "B". Go recheck those carbs of yours and I'll look 'em up for you.

Ok, I took some pictures so you can see for yourself. One did have numbers stamped on the top but they didn't have any letters with them.

The old Holley numbering system used to number 12- prefix as fuel pumps and some "fuel delivery systems" R-4013 and R-4285 both fall in the 1969 and early 1970 carb numbering group, but aren't specifically listed in my source material. Either way all the carb rebuild kits: Echlin, Borg-Warner, etc... have gone 'generic' lately and the Holley 1920 carb rebuild kit will rebuild any 1966-1973 carb and has a fair amount of extra gaskets for the other models (EGR/Smog vs. early model). You and also have them cross reference an echlin kit that will be the equivalent to the Borg-Warner 10392A which should get you all the stuff you need (except for a replacement float to rebuild the carb). Be forewarned that some carbs after sitting a while may not "come back", and remanf's are a real grab bag.
