I've never done any welding but would like to do a few things like welding patch/floor panels on my '65 Valiant, etc. Where should I get started? What kind of welder should I get? I'd like to get something basic but not junk,or somthing that I will quickly grow out of, or be lacking in capability.

Check with your local Community College, ours has a class for $50 on auto body work including welding, or a welding class for the same money. Some of the classes you can take your own projects in to do. :)

Local community college is where I learned to weld. The actual welding courses usually only deal with thick (ie .25"+) metal so make sure you know what the course cover before enrolling. A similar thread was here awhile back.
