I need to rebuild the engine in a 65 signet convertible I just snagged. First off I need to know for sure that the V8 is in fact a 273. Can someone here tell me where the number is on the engine block?

Also, any help and links to parts information would be helpful.

Where is a good source for an engine complete rebuild kit?

I also need a drivers side front fender. I'm also interested in finding metal to replace the rust holes around both rear quarters.

All information would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

Hi Widget,
you should look on the driver's side of the block to find the casting number. The last three numbers denote the displacement.

Pop off a valve cover and look at the rocker arms. If they have adjuster nuts on them, 99.9% of the time it is a 273. Regular stamped-steel rockers with no adjusters is a 318-360-340.

James, where on the drivers side of the block? There is a lot of grease. Sure, I plan on yanking out the engine, but I'd like to start finding parts while the weather here settles over the next week.

Engine ID can be found, usually, driver's side front of the block or on the drivers side of the block near the freeze out plugs.

Sounds about right. The numbers will be cast in rather than stamped. I think it's cool you're building a 273. Those are sweet little engines.

They sure are. They have floating piston pins and will wind up in a hurry. Plus the mechanical lifters give it a slant-like sound
