Just received my new super six manifolds (intake/exhaust)

I'd like to give them a good cleaning and powder coat. I'm trying to remove the bolts that hold the manifolds to each other. Are the manifolds themselves threaded where the connecting bolts go through?

The intake manifold has thru holes, the exhaust has tapped holes.
Getting all 3 bolts out of a used manifold set, with-out breaking the bolts is hard to do.

The best method I ever found to successfully separate those bolts is liberal and repeated soakings with a penetrating lubricant (PB Blaster, Knock 'Er Loose, etc... NOT WD-40) then work the nuts/bolts loose gingerly and in steps. Back it off a 1/4 turn, then tighten it back. Then go a 1/4 turn father and turn back, etc... If the nuts are rusted tight I have had some success using a flare wrench and tapping the wrench with a rubber mallet to simulate an air hammer.

Heat might help, but be prepared to just replace the bolts anyway.

I dont mind replacing them... What are the chances of getting a piece stuck in the manifold? Drill tap ouch!

If they do end up breaking off, yes, drilling is reqired, but for the two outboard ones, you do not need to re-tap the holes. There is no problem whatsoever just drilling them out and using nuts on the bottom. It requires an extra wrench when you're tightening them, but aside from that it works fine.

becareful when youre drilling them out of the exhaust manifold. its cast iron, which is a hell of alot softer than steel, so the drill is gunna wanna slide over to that
me and my dad simply had them machined out, then we retaped the holes
(ahh the wonders of having friends in machine shops)

Success!
PB blaster did the job! One application of PB before and after work for 2 days loosened up the bolts. Well... Kind of. I filed off all of the exposed threads before anything else. The bolts came out after a little turning back and forth. The bolts are trashed but the threads in the manifold are good. Thats all that counts.
thanks for the help
