Need more detail—a lot more. What do you mean by "heel over"? You mean sometimes it won't crank? Sometimes it'll crank but not start? If the latter, do you get any sputtering or other indication that it might be close to starting, or is it just endless dry cranking? Does this happen when the engine's hot? Cold? Both/either?

It also might help to know what year model and vehicle this engine is in (I'm guessing a '73 Swinger). Is it is manual or automatic transmission?

it is a 1973 dart swinger.

automatic tranny

i get the sputtering, or sound every other carburated engine gets right before starting, but it wont start.

the starting isnt affected by the weather, it had started in both dry hot, and wet cold. however, it does start right away after usage when the engine's warm.

few other things that have happened is that it takes really long to warm up. if i start it, and put it in D a few seconds later, the engine will sometimes die out. If it doesnt die, it'll take a real long time and a heavy foot to get that first roll.

ive noticed that i have a slight tranny slip on my second speed, and when i put it in drive on a flat surace the car will not roll forward by itself.

-thaks for the replie. i know i was all over the place on my info, but i hope it's sufficient.

Sounds to me as if the idle speed is adjusted too low, the choke is maladjusted and/or faulty, probably the idle mixture isn't set correctly, and there may be a problem with the trans kickdown linkage. Can you tell us in specific detail what work you've done so far?

the only true "detailed" work I 've done is replace the old choke with a new one.

would it help if i took pictures and posted them to show my possible maladjusted choke, or could somebody tell me how to adjust it?

ps. thanks slantsixdan
