I have a conventional timing set but I would like to go with a good roller chain and double sprocket set. I'm having trouble locating one. Anyone have a part number and source for a good quality roller timing set?

** that would be for a cast iron 225 by the way. **

Finding a timing set isn't difficult, in fact I have one already. The problem I'm having is finding a double roller timing set. I know they exist because I've seen them pictured, but I don't know where to find one. The only thing Summit has listed online is a Crane timing set but it is the conventional "silent" chain, not roller.

** It just occurred to me that this might belong in the Parts Wanted section. Moderators please feel free to move if you need to.

I just watched Ebay for a couple months and bought one of the original Mopar Performance double roller chains for 50 bucks. I'm not sure the total cost of the part listed already, but that is just one more option for you.

About 4 years ago Cloyes and or Dynagear offered that whole mess of parts in one kit, don't know if they are still offered in one kit, but the parts were still stamped with the same numbers Dan mentioned.

What is the deal with a double roller timing chain? How the double roller affects the performance?

A roller chain offers much more accurate timing than a conventional chain. Over time, a conventional chain will stretch out as the link pins wear and as it does it retards the cam timing. A roller setup has very little wear and friction so stretch is kept to a minimum.

I had to change the 200,000 mile factory in my Duster because the chain had stretched to the point where it made my car run like crap due to the retarded cam timing. It could only manage 15 MPG and was pretty gutless. A new chain made a HUGE improvement in how the car ran.

More accurate timing and less friction. The other type is quieter initially but they tend to get noisier as they wear anyway.

Is it possible to use a big-block gear drive in a slant?

No, it will not fit.

You don't need a gear drive on a slant anyway. It is WAY overkill. On a small displacement engine like the slant a gear drive gobbles up more horsepower than it actually helps to produce. Besides, they are noisy as hell and really don't last all that long.

If you are going stock, just get an aftermarket timing set.

If you are building a real hi-po slant and need the timing to be as accurate as possible, just get a roller setup. It will probably outlast your engine.
