As newbies w/ the SL6, my son and I have read almost everything we can get our hands on. Of particular interest is the Hot Rod Magazine article. Regarding that build-up, is there anything that you would have done differently? Are there things you did to this engine that was not in the article that are noteworthy?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Personally, I wanted to build a "long rod" 225 for that article, we could not find a set of 198 rods fast enough.

Some "noteworthy" things to do is smooth-off all the ragged edges on the crank and have it rebalanced.
I would also advise using a "hone plate" for the final cylinder sizing / honing operation.
I would think about using forged pistons if you want to use higher compression, NOS or turbo boost.
I spent a good amount of time opening-up all the oil galleys & passageways.
Overall that HRM engine was a good overall build that can be done by most anyone.
Let's face it high 14's on the motor and mid 13 on the juice is not to shabby.

Thanks for your response. I love this forum! This is like being able to ask Smokey Yunick about SB Chevies!

We are building the 225 crank/198 rod/2.2 piston combo you described in your "There's no replacement for Displacement" article. I bought the KB pistons, not planning on a turbo or NOS. I was wondering about HRM using NOS with the cast pistons.

I had a time finding 6 198 rods. Ended up getting them from three difference sources. We did get very lucky and found the factory Nitrided truck crank. Also picked up another cylinder head with the revised combustion chamber. We'll be following your advise on the oil passages.

As for the performance, the numbers this engine knocked down were quite impressive. Can't wait to get our car back together and see what it will do.

Thanks again for all of your help.
