hello sages- what i like about the forum is the depth of knowledge and detail others wiser than i are willing to share as well as the fiery editorializing. i did check on other dash pad rebuilders in the mags and on the net and literally found nothing. one responder noted there were at least two competitors . this is helpful. does anyone have any experience with their work and price? i still do think that the price of over 300 is high. i doubt the material, plastic sheeting and sponge costs 100. i dont know if it takes 4 hours at 50 or more dollars an hour to do the job. does anyone know about this . the going rate for car repair ive recently seen is 80/hr here and 100/hr in the nyc area. i agree specialty work when you need it is expensive. but wouldnt you think dash pad repair is commonly needed since all cars since about 68 have padded dashes and that mass production techniques have reduced the time on task ? regards bob

slantsix dan- i thank you for the dash pad vendors in oregon and arizona which you gave me. unfortunately when i called the phone numbers they were either disconnected or connected me to an unrelated business message. im not surprised because in the past when i have called numbers of others purporting to do dash pad resurfacing i have had the same problem. actuallymost of what you said i agree with. let meknow if you have other vendor contact numbers . think im going tobuy one soon from whitney for 69. maybe i can find a mint a body collecting dust in a pennsylvania garage for chump change. only kidding. regards bob

I restored the arm rests in my 69 chevelle wagon about ten years ago. At the time reproductions were not available as they are different than all the two door cars. I stripped off the shells, repaired holes in the foam with a two part urethane and replaced and sanded to shape some of the foam. I covered them with the correct grain marine grade vinyl using a heat gun to shape the vinyl. After it was shaped I glued it on. My point is this: it was a project that took some time and cost almost as much in materials as the reproductions cost when they came out. If you heat the vinyl too much it is ruined. The worst case would be over heating it and not realizing it, then it can crack right away and all your work is wasted. Its real easy to burn your fingers too. I have never tried a dash pad but it would be the same process. If you have the time and skill, great, otherwise it costs whatever someone wants to charge. A reproduction would cost less if there was enough of a market for one. Where is the Mr G's that was mentioned?
