Hey guys, Doc, what is the correct cooking temperature for the timing gear before installing
it onto the crank?

Also, does anyone of the engineering type know
how hot you would have to get the gear to change
the temper?

Just Curious
thanks
Mike

I usually heat mine to 225-250F

Keep the torch off of it. If it's glowing, you've probably messed it up.

A good welders supply store has an assortment of 'crayons' that melt at certain temps. If you can locate a Machinery's Handbook, it will have the info to calculate what temperature you need to achieve a particular increase in diameter for a particular material. Then you just use the appropriate crayon. Or you can just set some outside calipers for the proper slip fit on the ID. Remember that the increase in size, with heat, of the OD generates the same increase on the ID. If you have access to one of those infrared temperature reading guns, that would work also.
I agree with Gil, if you get it red hot you've gone too far.
