What size is the PCV hose suppose to be? Mine is 3/8 in. I wasn't sure if it was to big.

Factory size was 11/32" (8.7mm), but that size is generally unavailable. Use 3/8" (9.5mm); the less-than-1mm difference is of no consequence.

Can it be to long or to short? I'm having trouble trying to find what is causing my pcv valve to whistle. Dan told me it would have to be a vacuum leak somewhere downstream of the PCV valve (hose, carburetor body, carb-to-manifold gasket). I've done all that except the carb and I wanted to make sure I had done everything else before I try and replace the carb. My carb is a Carter YF 1bbl. I'm still not sure if it is the carb. The carb I had on it before was a Holley 5210 and the pcv whistled with that one also. Can the valve be defective? :shrug:

Maybe the gasket leaks a little? Does the whistle go away when you pull the valve out? you can put a tight wire tie around each end of the hose as a hose clamp to help it seal a little bit better. Can you feel suction on the bottom of the valve when you pull it out. If not the valve is bad.

I put a new gasket on and I have suction at the pcv valve. I also have each end clamped.

If the hose is too short, it won't reach one end or the other (PCV valve, carb).

If the hose is too long, it'll snag in the fan belts or drag on the pavement.

Would a crack in my aluminum intake cause this? I don't think its the carb. I sprayed all over it with lubricant and nothing happend. I did notice that when I was trying to find the sorce, it wouldn't whistle even if I lowered the idle down. When I have been driving and get to where I'm going I can here it whistle at idle. That makes me wonder if its some kind of crack.

the aluminum intake is notorious for developing leaks. They can be along the sides of the runners where the 2 halves were welded together or in the bottom of the plenum, under the carburetor where manifold heat is applied. And, of course, don't forget about where it mates to the head.

It was the valve itself. I went to a different store to get one. Must have been a bad batch at the other one.
