Until my newly ordered FSM gets here, I must rely on you all for help... My newly acquired 225 powered 69 Valiant, is equipped with a Holley 1 bbl. As I attend to other items in the engine compartment I smell gas. I don't see any dripping or anything..just some stains on the outside of the carb in a couple of places. Can you help me identify the carb?

Well, if it's the original type, it's a Holley 1920. You will find the carb type number on the top flat surface of the carburetor, just inboard of the fuel inlet fitting. It will be an R, then four digits, then possibly one or more letters. If you'll post that number, I can ID the carb positively for you.

Dan: There are two row of numbers on the carb body just inboard of the fuel inlet as follows: TOP ROW: 2848; BOTTOM ROW: 4162. Thanks for any help you may be able to provide. As an aside I found where the gasoline smell was coming from. Looks like a leaking bowl gasket. Bottom screw on the bowl is discolored and looks wet.

Carb is a Holley model 1920 type 4162. Original application on that carb is 1969 225 with automatic trans, so probably an original unit. Sounds like you have identified a leak point, also sounds like it's time to go through the carburetor with a rebuild kit. Walker makes the best kits, followed by Standard-Hygrade. You'll want to replace the float, too. Don't be tempted to trade in this carburetor on a "remanufactured" or "rebuilt" unit from a parts store — they are junk!

I went to several local auto parts stores in my area, particularly a couple that have been turned on to Mopars, and nobody can come up with a Walker or Standard-Hygrade rebuild kit for my 1920. I've not been successful goggling either, but then I was born long before computers in the home. Any thoughts?

Glad to help out. What's the trouble: You can't find a parts store that stocks either of those brands, or you found stores that stock those brands, but nobody can come up with the right kit for you?

You may want to try calling Walker on 323-232-3359 and asking where you might buy their stuff, either near your location or via mail-order. The kit you need is their number 15480A, and float number 100-86.

I finally found another carb(Thanks, NewLancerMan), and although it has a few minor differences, I was curious. What did it come off of?

A 7585 is an Economaster made in the early 1980s with star-booster venturi, extra-wide idle transfer slots and other special features and calibration for precision, accuracy and economy. Two of these would make an excellent pair for the 2x1 setup, because the Economaster features lend themselves very well to the reduced airflow in each carb at lower engine speeds. You could without problem put in any combination of 7583, 7584, 7585, 7586 and 7587, as the only differences amongst these Economaster 1920s are throttle lever configuration, bowl vent configuration, and presence/absence of a venturi vacuum takeoff port to run an EGR system.

The 6156 is from a 1972 225 with auto trans and 49-state/Canada emissions. Two of these will work for the 2x1 setup if you were to build them both carefully and spend some time dialling in the jets so they work the way you want. You could mix a 6156 with similar carbs from '70, '71 or '73, because the differences are inconsequentially minor.

I would not recommend running one Economaster and one standard 1920; the calibration and flow differences are too great and your performance improvement will be materially hampered by the irreconcilable differences between the carb serving the front three and the carb serving the rear three.

I have available an unmolested (never "remanufactured") '71 equivalent of your '72 (6156) carb, working and complete but wanting cleanup and rebuild, together with a new float and Walker kit, if you would like to pick up a carb that's a better match for your 6156 -- send me a PM.

I spoke with folks at Walker awhile ago. I may be able to purchase the rebuild kit 15480A from a vendor about 2 1/2 hours away, but according to Walker Float 100-86 has been discontinued and there is no replacement.

Use float number 100-14 instead.

This carb is about to do me in. Can't tell if the float is toast or not since I don't know its original weight compared to now. This carb appears to have been rebuilt and not that long ago.
