I tore down my head over the weekend glass beaded it at work and now I'm ready to cc and do some minor port work. But I have a few questions to start with .My head casting # 2843169.

Looking down on top of the head there are 2 big pipe plugs between the rockers for the # 2& 5 cylinders whats their purpose?

Why are the valves in oppioppisiteations. I mean looking down at the face of the valves with the water neck to your right the exhaust valves are on the right hand side for cylinders 123 and on the left for 456. Why is this?

The intake manifold puts the intakes toward the center for better fuel distribution, hence the valve orientation.

The plugs you're talking about, I believe, seal holes left over from the casting process. Core supports for the water jacket cores, etc.
